[MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
Dropping in from lurk mode, wowie zowie you guys have too much time on your hands for all this bickering... Need a quick recommendation on how to resurrect the leater seats that have been drying out in my barn for the last few years. Practical real world experience appreciated. TIA! -Zach
Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
Some people have recommend Leatherique. I tried it. In my opinion it does not work worth a damn on dried out leather. Neatsfoot oil does the trick. It will darken the leather, however. The stain that MB uses has held up to it well so far. You only see the darkness through the cracks. To fix that, you would need to re-stain the leather, I guess. I tried the Compound and the pure oil. The oil goes farther and is a bit thicker but either works well. I paid ~ $10/gallon for the compound and $16/gallon for the oil from a mail order horse tack supply company that sells saddles and stuff I found on Google. The smell goes completely away after a few weeks. That or I'm so used to it I can't tell any more. -Dave Walton 87SDL, 94S350, 99E300 On 10/25/06, Zach [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dropping in from lurk mode, wowie zowie you guys have too much time on your hands for all this bickering... Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
Dave, if Leatherique did not work for you it is possible that it was not applied properly. I have been using it for many years on many vehicles and it does a wonderful job. If Zach buys it from me I will tell him the proper Way to use it and I am sure he will get excellent results. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of dave walton Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 12:11 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment Some people have recommend Leatherique. And don't sit on them until they're soft. Craig
Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
I've gone as far as to pool leatherique on the underside of the leather until saturated. When it dries, I am left with just that - dry leather. Wiping it on the surface does diddly. I will admit that the leather is marginally more flexible after leatherique, but Neatsfoot oil actually leaves the leather in a condition that I would consider sitting on. Maybe Zach should try both and report back? How about if I send him an ounce or so of neatsfoot oil, and you send him a little Leatherique to test with? Email me offlist with your mailing address, Zach. Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
How long did you leave it on? What was the outside temperature when you did this? What did you wipe it off with? Many questions. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of dave walton Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 12:30 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment I've gone as far as to pool leatherique on the underside of the leather until saturated. Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
87 SDL left in sun for last 10 years before I bought it. Remove rear seat. turn upside down, remove leather cover around edges and put seat back in car with leather peeled back. Did not wipe it off, left it on until it was all absorbed (applied to underside open grain) in a small test area. It was summertime in Northern Ohio. 70-80's F give or take. I've since applied neatsfoot oil to the top of the leather in my 94S350 as well. The entire car (front seat, back seat, headrests) absorbed about 2 gallons. The 87 is much better, but is still a bit stiff. the 94 is now glove soft all over. Plan to hit them again next summer. I'm a bit worried about the long term effect of the neatsfoot oil on the foam in the seats, but so far, so good. -Dave Walton On 10/25/06, Rusty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How long did you leave it on? Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
The hotter the better for Leatherique. You should massage it in like it's your first girlfriend's breasts. Put car outside in the sun, leaving windows up to create a sauna effect. After at least 8 hours wipe clean with Leatherique Pristine Clean. Then wipe again with a damp cloth. Lastly, buff once with dry cloth. Do this 4 times a year and you will always have leather as soft as a baby's behind. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of dave walton Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 12:56 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment 87 SDL left in sun for last 10 years before I bought it. Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment
You should use the Pristine Clean. The whole Leatherique thing is a 4 step process. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 2:06 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] dried-out leather treatment Rusty wrote: I would recommend Leatherique which I sell. Zymol makes very nice Leather cleaning and restoring liquid products, and best of all - you can buy them for uner $10/ea. at Target (Tahr-ZHAY) On 10/25/06, Rusty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You should use the Pristine Clean.
