Thanks Dan,

All good points that I should have brought up in the original post. Sorry,

Somewhere in the world there is MBZ list of approved materials and what test
strip configuration is right for MBZ and how to interpret properly.

Be careful with coolant test strips, for a number of reasons:

1.) They have a shelf life.

2.) There are literally 20-30 different types of test strips, for testing the
pH to testing for the presence of various additives, like DCA.

If you use test strips, be educated about what you get and what it's intended
to tell you.  Just because it's a "coolant test strip" doesn't necessarily mean
it's telling you what you want to know

Been using them for years on all kind of diesel powered equipment to test
for presence of the good or bad stuff in coolant.  Napa sells them, just
ask.  There is a shelf life so check when you buy and get fresh.

Takes about 5 minutes to determine if your coolant should be changed or if
SCA [suplemental Coolant Additives] need to be added [in the case of large
engines].

You dip the strip into coolant and watch for color change, compare against
the supplied chart... done.

You *taste* your engine coolant???

Once it looked like water I gave it a little lick, and was
surprised how sour it still was. So I kept flushing until
it tasted more like water too. Did not consume any, rinsed
and spit afterwards. Why tax the buffering of the new incoming
coolant by putting it in acid residue?

I guess you could then connect a hose and flush it. But with
the block drain open and the lower radiator hose off, I'm pretty

FSM says to install fitting at upper radiator hose for a water source (garden
hose), install a thermostat that is forced open, open the block drain, and
start the engine to flush the coolant.

I went to the pick-n-pull for a short section of radiator hose, bought a T
fitting and garden hose adapter at hardware store, and filled with the citric
acid mix, let it run for fifteen minutes, then opened the block drain until the
water came out clear.

That will help, but it's best to flush, run the system with fresh water, flush
again, and fill.

It won't completely remove the old coolant, but will lower the concentration
levels to insignificant amounts.

Ideally, if you can pull the block drain and flush you'll get nearly all of it
out.

I think you're thinking specifically of DexCool there. Zerex brands G05 as
being "compatible with all types of coolant".

In fact I've had 2 cars now with mixed G05 and green stuff. When I did the
water pump on my '83 240D it was so cold out (well below freezing) I had no
interest in anything other than the job at hand so the radiator never got
drained.

My current '84 190D has a teeny leak somewhere (still tracking) so its got
maybe 30% G05 on top of the green (relatively new, the radiator was out when
the new timing chain cover went in). When I find the leak it'll get all G05.

In any event, when you change to MB/Zerex G-05, you will want to flush
the cooling system thoroughly. I recall being told that mixing the Green

As I recall they did claim it to be "lifetime" coolant originally, then backed
off to 5 years.

VW also claims (or did at one time) "lifetime" coolant (their blue formula, G11

issue. When I was in college and a little later my wife and I had a 1985
Vanagon camper. Everyone we knew who had one complained about the cooling
system leaking left and right and the heads getting eaten by the GM Dex -
cool coolant. I drove that van up to 220K - bought it used - with no
cooling issues thanks to annual changes of coolant and keeping it under 65
MPH. It was a blast. But moral of long winded story - change the coolant.
No such thing as lifetime fluids.

So what's the best thing to replace it with? GO-5?

When my Olds started leaking from a plastic fitting a couple months after I
bought it, I flushed the system and replaced it with GO-5.
No problem noted in the past 3 years, except the loss of another 10 year old
plastic fitting that failed a month or two after the first one.
I really should remove my plastic intake manifold and inspect it closely, but I
don't think the I4 manifolds carry water like the V6 ones do.

I don't know about the GM stuff, but I do know that combining green and gold is
a very bad thing.

We saw this on occasion with industrial engines, and if the engine is not
thoroughly rinsed out to remove all traces of the old coolant, damage will
almost always occur.

Re: [MBZ] green antifreeze

2011-08-19 Thread John Reames
Green has a pH of 11 or so.

Hot aluminum and bases mix too well, resulting in erosion and pin-holing.

The proper stuff will have a pH of 7 and is buffered to stay that way.

I view "commodity" antifreeze as being a lot like oil filters; some time ago,
someone did a tear-down of a bunch of filters. (moparman?)

Photos were posted. At least one of them permitted unfiltered oil to bypass the
element from the factory.

One manufacturer was even putting special "lubricant" (in the form of fine
insoluble participant!) in filters and charging a premium, while claiming that
not only was it safe, but that it was superior.
