Re: [MBZ] Old cars
I saw and had a ride in a Lada when I was in Cuba [Ministry of Tourism vehicle I think]. Not impressive to say the least, but they were thought to be a step up from a Moscovich [sp?]. It only broke down once on the way to dinner, and was repaired quickly by some fuse box wiring with a coil of wire. BTW, if you are ever in Havana there is a great restaurant in the fort at the entrance to the harbor, under the lighthouse. You have to walk some really weird paths to get there [uneven steps with no guardrail down from the parking lot by the army base, through a barely lighted tunnel into the fort, then across some unmarked courtyards to the restaurant entrance], but a nice spot once you get there. There might even be some signs now. I don't think we had them but the UK sure did. Check on Youtube for the one where the Top Gear guys have some company (I forget a division of Lotus maybe?) that soups up some guy's Lada. Yamaha was supposed to design it, they ended up making the whole powerplant. 220 hp at a time when the top Mustang V8 was about 225. Both the Bull and the Pony would do 145-150mph, but the Pony was rear wheel drive and launched much better. I think almost any car made in the past 10-15 years will easily run to over 200.000K given reasonable service. Lots of friends have Japanese cars and swear by them, even thought they have had their share of problems too. Only difference being, an new alternator for a Toyota usually costs a lot more than a new one for a Chev. I used to work with a guy who was a former service adviser at one of those high-line megadealers in the late '80s and early '90s. Getting ahold of even the Japanese parts for Sterling was a problem. Apparently they took even longer to arrive than Jag parts, and when they did arrive, they were packed in old-fashioned wooden crates with the address and whatnot burned on by hand, instead of something frivolous like a paper label. They quickly ended up buying as much as possible from the Honda dealer down the street.
