Re: [MBZ] replacing water pump
Go ahead and plan to replace the short piece of hose between the water pump (or is it the block? working from memory here) and the thermostat housing while you're in there. If it hasn't been replaced in a while, it's surely easier to do now than later. Actually I'm pretty sure that was replaced a year or so ago when I got a new thermostat -- was too busy at the time and had my indy do it -- I'll double check. From: Allan Streib [EMAIL PROTECTED] So, I'll be replacing the water pump on my 300D -- any tips on removing the old one, I've had trouble in the past separating the pump from the pump housing. Allan -- I use a screw driver sharpened to a knife edge and gently tap it into the joint all around the water pump. If the pump has been glued in with hardening permatex or something similar, you might have to do a lot of tapping. I've never failed to get a pump loose that way. Re: [MBZ] replacing water pump
If you use this method make sure you have the edge of the screwdriver on the pump and not the engine block. Damage the pump and it doesn't matter - damage the block and you have problems. The mating surface must be flat so it meets the water pump and seals with the gasket. I like the BFH (or LFH) method better - remove all the bolts tap on the Pump and it'll probably fall off. Maybe I've just been lucky but I haven't seen the hardening Permatex in a long time. It's really not a dfficult job - just get a gal of fresh antifreeze, a gasket (Rusty may provide one) and study the Workshop Manual - especially look at the work that must be done beforehand - sometimes the radiator needs to be removed for easier access. Re: [MBZ] replacing water pump
I prefer a 1 wide (25mm) putty knife to tap in around the edges of things like water pumps. I feel (don't have any real evidence) they it's less likely to do damage to the mating surfaces.
