[MBZ] towing a 1980 300 SD?
Hi, Guys We are needing to tow our Sadie back home. She broke down out in the toolies. What is safe, without messing up the transmission? We need to go about 5 miles. Or do we need a tow truck? Thanks for info and input, as always!! Christy, tell us more. Will it idle? Does your tow vehicle have a hitch?, Weather? Hilly terrain? You should be fine if you tow slowly -- those trannies have a rear pump, so you won't fry the guts of the tranny from no lubrication. In fact, they can be tow started -- run up to 35 mph in neutral and drop it into 2nd! While you wrote this post, Peter, I was trying to remember whether the 116 has the same extra pump in the tranny like the 107. Good to know. I'd still change the fluid after towing it with all four wheels on the ground, just on principle. Never hurts to switch the ATF in a Benz over to Mobil1, as Marshall always recommended. If you are just going 5 miles a tow dollies is just fine. Chris N John wrote: Hi, Guys We are needing to tow our Sadie back home. She broke down out in the toolies. If you are using a 2-wheel dolly, put the rear wheels up on the thing and take it as far as you want. Towing 4 wheels down with a rope is not a trivial task. That is to say that if all goes well, it's easy but if anything goes wrong things tend to go very, very wrong. Basically the rear vehicle should do all the braking for both cars and keep the rope taught. If the front vehicle has to make an abrupt stop, the person in the rear vehicle needs to keep their cool and plow square into the lead car. Trying to avoid an impact by turning while tethered by a strong rope is not a good idea and will seldom end well. Hitting bumper-to-bumper is a much better alternative regardless of speed. If the car will idle, that will keep power to the brakes and steering. If not, I'd call a wrecker or use a dolly. -Dave Walton On Sun, Dec 13, 2009 at 5:56 PM, Kaleb C. Reminds me of the car I saw at the end of a rope behind a pickup truck, going down the road with smoke pouring off the brakes. They must have been very close to catching fire. If the car will idle, that will keep power to the brakes and steering. If not, I'd call a wrecker or use a dolly. I rope-towed the 380 SL home, I rigged a door lock vacuum pump (from an early 126) to the brake booster so that the driver would have power brakes. Steering he had to do the hard way, but it's easy so long as you're moving. And if you're not moving, why do you need to steer? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
