2009-03-06 Thread Jim Cathey
He says the 115 was running fine but the blower resistor overheated
and caught fire, burned under the dash or something,

The blower resistor pack is inside the air intake plenum, under
the grille. The connector on the firewall goes to it. Nothing
there to catch fire except the resistor pack itself, which is
metal, and its plastic connector. And the cable over to the
blower motor, of course!

Unless, of course, that it was something else and _was_ under
the dash. That could be a mess.

thinking that for $800 (if I beat on the guy a bit) or $1000 and some
parts and a bit of time, a very nice car could be running.

That could be OK. It's all about price and effort. But that
kind of territory, if the car is otherwise nice and you realistically
could put it right enough to drive (you should see my to-be-done pile!)
then you can have a pretty nice ride for not so much that way.

I thought the cracking head problem had been dealt with by
the rodbender era, so the chances of a cracked head are down
to 'normal'. Unless it got overheated at all.

Thanks for that info. I have a large TODO pile too, and wifey is not
real tolerant of more additions to the 6 on site. She loves the new
300SD, this 350SD is much much nicer even, I'm wondering if I could
tempt her This thing is tempting for a Kleb kind of price. Even if
the 350 goes bad, I'm guessing a 300turbo would fit in there well (and I
have a Chevy 350 lump and tranny that would be a 350 swap!) so that
could be a fallback.

I have no interest in the 115, was wondering if anyone else might want a
straight southern body/chrome bits (I was surprised at how good it all
looked) with a ratty interior and whatever that dash "fire" issue was,
but supposedly runs OK. It could be a neat car with some work (wouldn't
they all!). Maybe the fire was the blower motor itself -- I have not
paid much attention to the discussion on these cars -- maybe the motor
itself fried? Maybe for a couple $100...

Or I could start Okie acres in SC

For $800, it is hard to go wrong. Even if it isn't worth messing with

I've heard of a number of 500 SE cars, never heard of a short wheelbase 560
though. I know they were never offered in Canada, not sure about other
countries though?

560SL was only for the US and Australia, but the 126 coupe and LWB sedan
got the 5.6 in Europe and elsewhere from 1985-1991 (SE was 1988-1990).
The 5.0 was also available elsewhere alongside the 5.6 until the end of
production in 1991.
