I agree. They are getting premium prices for these cars, because there just
aren't many of them around and a lot of people who bought them realize they are
special.

I know exactly what you mean---I don't know the official M-B name for
it, but other manufacturers call it "saddle":

There is also a BEAUTIFUL 95 E320 Sedan that is blue with the really cool dark

I wonder if convertible sales are too low to get a good sampling, so they just
add a little to the coupe prices (which might be based on sedan prices).

In the 70s the NADA book continually showed you could buy a 3-5 year
old 220 or 240D for under $2000. I kept thelling the insurance
adjusters to go out and buy all those cars they could find and I
would sell them for $4000. Nobody ever produced a $2000 220D.

So they claim. I still think the numbers Mitch gave are off by a
factor of two at least. There have been many other examples of the
blue books getting it wrong on special-interest cars.

If I'm wrong, then I want in on some of that $5,000 E320 Cab action.
I'll buy three or four, stuff them in a warehouse, then be sitting

I smell another arbitrage opportunity for you, Donald. Sounds like
they're unlikely to know what the car is worth nor how collectible it
is. The 124 convertible is the modern equivalent of the W111
cabriolet ('68-'71? 280SE). If prices I see on CL and eBay are any
indication, the car should sell for anywhere from twice to ten times
the price of a plain ol' 6-cylinder 124 sedan of the same year--i.e.
$10,000 on up.

Asking price and selling price are often quite different... Edmunds and
the like base their prices on actual title transfers. On the other
hand, it's not unusual for the price to be understated on those
documents, to avoid some of the sales tax.

Sounds like the kinda guy who might fix things as they come up. It's old
enough, I would imagine a number of things have already been addressed on
it. I think they're great looking cars too. Years ago when I was in the
club, and guy sold a mint mint mint SL280 to buy a new E320 convertible at
the time. I think a few here had some sportline option or something. I
remember one guy had a coupe, which I think had a 23 valve head or
something, different suspension and seats, etc. I think the standard M104
is a 16 valve engine ?

Anyway, if you really want it, keep bugging him, or reminding him you would
like first chance to buy it should he ever decide to sell. I've got a few
cars that way. For me, it's preferable to see something you really like,
and offer to buy it, than trying to sort through all the for sale junk out
there with the hope you'll find one you like.

Good luck.
