Re: [MBZ] ATTN Dave Walton
Pics don't look too bad to me. I replaced the rod at 180k. That car is now at 225k. I needed to get the car back in service and was tired of screwing around with it so I put the heavier rod back in without matching it's weight to the others. There is no way to reduce it's weight without taking off good metal. I only replaced the rod and a couple head bolts that were out of spec. I recall that one or two of the valve lifters looked worn on one side and replaced those too. Probably did not have to do that. I know everyone has their list of what should be replaced when doing a job like this (which I ignored) and I probably pissed off the engine-gods for not balancing the rods, but the truth is this engine is flawed from the start and no one but Mercedes knows how to rebuild them right. You could spend 5K replacing all the wear parts and you would still have a defective engine. My advice is to cut your losses, replace the bent rod, get the car back together and enjoy driving it. And no, it is not yet burning oil or making funky noises or blowby. When it dies for real I'll be replacing it with a 606.962 from a W210 E300. This is the car that I run on 100% WVO during the summer. I thin it with diesel or kerosene in the winter. They can take a lot of abuse :-) -Dave Walton On 12/1/09, Kaleb C. Do you remember if your piston had wear to the front side like mine did? Did your cylinder have the hone marks worn off the front side, or do you remember? Im probably just going to replace the rod, piston, put it back together and see what happens. My other plan is to replace all 6 rods, and if something happens down the road, I will at least have 6 rods I can put in another engine if I need to. 3rd option is to see if that spare motor I have is any good. dave walton wrote: Pics don't look too bad to me. All I know about that spare engine is that it has that crate motor tag on it, and I have always wanted to see what rods it has in it. I guess I could pull the pan and see if I can see any numbers on the rods. Mitch Haley wrote: Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: 3rd option is to see if that spare motor I have is any good.
