To clarify: The seller is asking $2000 in the CL ad, but she already told me she's got $1600 in it and would take that just to get out from under the car. Dan On Feb 21, 2015, at 9:17 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Stumbled across a 1997 S500 on the local CL yesterday. Cheap, ($1600) but looks good. Spoke to the owner at length, a woman who bought the car at a local machinery auction at the urging of a relative (who knew nothing about MBs, of course.) Based on her description and some photos she sent the car is in good shape, with 153k on the clock and everything working. It does need nitrogen spheres for the SLS, as she says it's hard if she goes over bumps - she had it checked out by a local indie who confirmed this - which is why she's freaking out over maintenance costs. I'm intrigued over the car's history, as it was an MBUSA lease for four years when new, then went into private ownership here in Tampa, where it's been all of its life. Parts buddy at the dealership pulled a history on it and it was being serviced regularly until 2010 or thereabouts, when it had over 100k on it. I'm wondering how it ended up at the machinery auction, as this is a place where local government sells a lot of asset seizures. Maybe it was abandoned, seized in a drug deal, who knows? This also explains the price, as I have attended this very auction and most of the buyers are, well, shall we say Bubbas looking for their next mudder ruck. Furrin' cars don't seem to sell well at this place from my experience. I'm going to pull out the laptop with the DAS system on it and a bunch of tools and go over and look at it this afternoon. Either it will be a diamond in the rough or a total beater. I'm leaning towards the former based on the photos and description by the owner. We'll see.
