Re: [MBZ] Car go BOOM

2018-11-10 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Sadly, "BOOM" is almost always a broken rod, although on a 617 a broken cam can
sound similar.

If you are lucky and it's the cam that failed, you have a rebuildable engine.
If it tossed a rod, get another engine.

Re: [MBZ] Car go BOOM

2018-11-10 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Broken crankshaft? Not usual with an OM617, but possible. especially
if someone changed the flywheel, etc.
Broken chain/camshaft/cam towers is possible. with that, you can
generally hear the chain hit the case, then the cam and bearings crunch,
then silence, as you coast to a stop.

Rod thrown?

It does not sound like that engine will be revived without much .

… and much smoking, with grinding noise as the SD coasted to a stop.

I was headed to a club event (DIY shop for the day) and of a sudden,
the engine produced a rumbling harmonic, then went BOOM, with smoke
trailing, motor went dead, and the grinding too place while the RPM
were dropping.

Once sort of safely out of the lane of traffic, I popped the hood and
tried to see if there were massive leakage. I found none. Oil was at
top of the mark. Trans fluid was warm and smelling ok. Coolant
overflow tank was below the low mark. No smells of evil from under the
hood, no sign of obvious damage under the car from front to back. I
was about 12 miles from the venue, but figured I would be stupid to
attempt to get there, even if folks would be on hand to assist in
repairs, so I called AAA.

I attempted to get it to crank, but all it did was poot out some more
smoke, and would not crank again. The glow system worked, just not
enough power in the starter to spin the motor. Maybe too much
resistance in the block? Battery is about six month old and got a full
charge after draining two weeks ago.

The SD is now parked at my indy awaiting his prognosis on Monday.
