I like that they don't appear to have a lot of bright blue LED illumination and
don't look like a child's fantasy of what a radio in a spaceship should look
like.

Blue LED light is the worst when driving at night.

Same harness (ISO DIN) as the factory in a 95 E320, but you need to swap

You don't think the UI is simple and easy, compared to Alpine or Blaupunkt?

For $40 radios, they work quite well. Good sound, good range, no CD
mechanisms to deal with, play nice with USB sticks.

I bought one of these to stick in my 350SDL to prepare it for sale last
week.

After a few days, I can say it works about as well as I'd expect for a
radio under $150. The UI is pretty terrible and its not very polished in
terms of software quality. (Keep in mind I've been working in SW quality
for systems like this radio for the last 15 years, so I'm pretty in tune
with these things)

It does what it should, but I'm not impressed. Not sure I'd buy one for
myself to use long-term. The big advantage it has is the look: it fits
the dash well. For that reason alone, I still prefer it over an Alpine or
Blaupunkt. I can't really compare to their easy of use or quality, but I'd
guess its similarly poor in this price range.

I have a few Becker Cascades that I move car to car that are much better
radios, but of course, much more expensive.

Re: [MBZ] Continental Radio Supplier

2017-05-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I had a couple different Beckers in my last 240D and didn't consider either
particularly intuitive. The first I had no manual and couldn't figure it at
all. The second was better because I could find an online manual but it would
randomly switch into modes I didn't understand and sometimes switch into
"traffic" mode which apparently doesn't work here. I honestly like the Pioneer
in my Jetta much more...

looks like alpine changed the design The one I bought was bottom or
next to the bottom alpine model. The one Gerry posted is several
notches up.

This one looks more like the older alpines I have.

you'd have to check on current models. the first one I bought in 2000

since 2006 or 7, so they have more bells and whistles now.

I bought that radio from an online retailer in Germany, after six months the
radio reception degraded and it would barely pull in local stations. I
complained to the retailer, they said send it for a warranty replacement or
repair. I mainly used it for Bluetooth (podcasts and phone calls) so kept
using it for a bit, pondering what to replace it with between sending it back
to Germany and the time it took for them to return it. Finally I decided on
getting the next higher model, with CD player, that I would use as a temporary
replacement, and when the original was repaired / replaced, I would move the CD
player model to SWMBO's car (she really likes the Bluetooth phone feature).

Ordered CD model, installed it and shipped bad radio to German retailer
following their instructions. Sent them emails reminding them of their
warranty offer, heard nothing back.

Radio languished in customs, apparently they didn't want to pay that, and
eventually the German post returned it to me.

Now over a year has passed since I purchased it, I should probably call the
retailer and complain, see if they will honor the warranty. Would probably be
cheaper for them to just ship me a new radio. I'll even offer to pay shipping.

There is a rather lengthy thread in the R129 forum on Benzworld about these
units as retrofits for the stock Beckers when they die. The majority of the
responses of actual owners have been good as I recall.

Mine is in my W126 350SDL, and while it replaced an aftermarket (Sony) head
unit that was in the car when I got it, I love mine for a lot of reasons, the
main one being aesthetics. Having an auxiliary input AND Bluetooth hands free
capability is icing on the cake.
