exactly; the dog has trained its owners well.

sadly, most dog training problems are the result of a poorly
trained owner. true Separation Anxiety issues can be a bitch (heh) to
deal with, but it sounds like this couple could benefit from the
services of a qualified behaviorist. in lieu of that, maybe you could
order them a couple of videos from Leerburg or some such place,..?

Well, my neighbors certainly are not deaf, but they have an
overactive German Shepard who is quite convinced she needs to bark
at EVERY ONE who moves in her sight. They ascribe it to separation
anxiety (pup was taken from her mother before being properly weaned)
and poor socialization before they got her.

Whatever the reason, they do call her off and do what they can to
keep her from barking so much. I don't mind, specifically because I
know they are doing their best to train her not to make so much noise.

The fun part of this is that she will shut up, sit, and beg for
treats, but start barking again as soon as she's gobbled them down.
Quite funny. She is also wagging her tail full blast while barking
up a storm, so I suspect she's just attempting to assert dominance
and protect her people (which is fine, I don't plan to go into the
yard while she's out, I don't trust the tail, so to speak).

Now, if they let her bark herself silly and didn't say or do
anything, that would be a different story. Nice people, I can
tolerate an over- protective dog for a few years compared to a nice
dog and wretched people.

480VAC should do..

I understand that one dousing shouldn't hurt anything, but a certain
big dog comes through daily and douses the same spots/sides on all
of the shrubs across the front of the house. This leads to
dead/brown and deformed areas on the plants. We're still waiting
for them to come back better than before. Having grown up as a farm
boy in eastern NC, I have a bit of understanding of the process,
including nitrogen, soil pH, lime, etc.

Of course, there is the principle the daily intrusion - dog owners
thinking that it's OK to bring dogs to my yard to do its business.
If it were MY dog, I probably wouldn't mind so much, would I?

One dousing shouldn't hurt anything, especially if you get any amount of
rain at all. In fact it should help fix nitrogen into the soil (at least a
little).
Repeated doses will certainly burn a plant but again after some rain it
should come back better than before. Where Buster does his business all
winter the grass gets burned pretty bad. This spring I limed it real heavy
(with the pelletized slow release stuff) and its come back real thick

Well, my neighbors certainly are not deaf, but they have an overactive
German Shepard who is quite convinced she needs to bark at EVERY ONE who
moves in her sight. They ascribe it to separation anxiety (pup was taken
from her mother before being properly weaned) and poor socialization
before they got her.

Whatever the reason, they do call her off and do what they can to keep
her from barking so much. I don't mind, specifically because I know they
are doing their best to train her not to make so much noise.

The fun part of this is that she will shut up, sit, and beg for treats,
but start barking again as soon as she's gobbled them down. Quite funny.
She is also wagging her tail full blast while barking up a storm, so I
suspect she's just attempting to assert dominance and protect her people
(which is fine, I don't plan to go into the yard while she's out, I don't
trust the tail, so to speak).

Now, if they let her bark herself silly and didn't say or do anything,
that would be a different story. Nice people, I can tolerate an over-
protective dog for a few years compared to a nice dog and wretched
people.

Quite funny. She is also wagging her tail full blast while barking
up a storm, so I suspect she's just attempting to assert dominance and
protect her people (which is fine, I don't plan to go into the yard
while she's out, I don't trust the tail, so to speak).

Now, if they let her bark herself silly and didn't say or do anything,
that would be a different story. Nice people, I can tolerate an over-
protective dog for a few years compared to a nice dog and wretched
people.

Yep, that, too - "My dog/child wouldn't do THAT, etc., etc."
Oh, let's not forget, "My dog's pee doesn't kill shrubs and flowers." 'May
not have killed the shrubs, yet, but it sure turns the shrubs brown (dead)
where they were "doused."

How is it that so many dog owners seem to be deaf to the relentless,
incessant barking of their dogs. Coupla hours ('bout 6 AM) before I got
up

this morning, a "small" dog somewhere nearby began barking - a shrill
fast-paced bark. In spite of many years around jet engines, my hearing is
still pretty good - good enough to make me wonder - do dog owners go deaf,
or do they just not give a damned about how their dogs' incessant barking
annoys others nearby. Obviously, a dog's bark is more annoying to others
than to the dog owner. I think, if it were as annoying to the owner as it
is to others, the owner would make the dog, shut the hell up. BTW, I've
owned dogs, too, but I trained them not to bark so.

It's probably the same "syndrome" that makes the dog owner think it's OK
to
bring the dog into my yard to do his/her "business." I call it the
"my-dog

syndrome" - my dog is better than your dog, my dog doesn't bite, my dog's
bark is not annoying, my dog barks silently, my dog's crap doesn't stink,
my

dog's crap doesn't make a mess on somebody's shoes or carpet, etc., etc.

Re: [MBZ] Deaf dog owners

2013-06-09 Thread Peter Frederick
Well, my neighbors certainly are not deaf, but they have an overactive
German Shepard who is quite convinced she needs to bark at EVERY ONE
who moves in her sight. They ascribe it to separation anxiety (pup
was taken from her mother before being properly weaned) and poor
socialization before they got her.

Whatever the reason, they do call her off and do what they can to keep
her from barking so much. I don't mind, specifically because I know
they are doing their best to train her not to make so much noise.

The fun part of this is that she will shut up, sit, and beg for
treats, but start barking again as soon as she's gobbled them down.
Quite funny. She is also wagging her tail full blast while barking
up a storm, so I suspect she's just attempting to assert dominance and
protect her people (which is fine, I don't plan to go into the yard

I like hearing my neighbors' dogs barking. Means they're on the job.
And it's usually because my cats are teasing them, so I figure it's
only fair.
