2020-04-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I thought an '85 190D was a pretty good car. It had the same hp as a 240D but
weighed less. With the extra power I would expect a 240D 3.0 to be quite
driveable with a 4spd.
Someday I want to build a 240D 3.0T 4spd. With a turbo engine and 4spd
transmission the 123 platform would be really fun.

Our '82 240D/3.0 was a great car to drive, even in Los Alamos at
7000-7400'. There was no problem keeping up with traffic; one just
had to rev the engine up to near redline and there was plenty of power.
Admittedly, one did have to pay attention on freeway on-ramps and start
accelerating as hard as possible as soon as possible (just like our '89
BRV), but it was great. Nothing like our '72 220D/8, with its short first
gear.

It runs and drives and its only $1,400 dollars!
The bumpers alone are worth that.

I'm dubious of his claim. The car is, however, the right color for a hot
climate, unlike our Midnight Blue 240D/3.0.

2020-04-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ve always had an affinity for hearses or ambulances as a design thing, not
for function. I think it started when I was a teenager and I wanted to buy a
really nice 1964 Cadillac hearse that belonged to a schoolmate’s dad who ran a
local funeral home. $500 bucks, it was in perfect condition, and was the
classic black on black. Dad said, “There’s NO way I’m having a hearse parked in
my driveway!!” so that was pretty much the end of that idea, and on I went to a
1959 barn door VW van. Yeah, he wasn’t much happier about that.

I doubt very much you would find a “true” W123 conversion in the States, since
anything was here would have to have been imported. I have wondered how common
they are in Europe.

This one definitely has manual climate controls. You can see the heater valves

I never understood why the domestic W123 sedans didn’t have the manual sunroof
like the wagons did. That was the nicest thing as far as simplicity when it
came to options in those cars. Grab the “T” handle, twist and pull back.

Absolutely. My first MB was a 1980 300TD, so patience was an absolute virtue
when it came to performance. Not 240D level, but close to it.

I’m not besmirching the normally aspirated 617, but I will say that once you’ve
driven a turbocharged version, it’s darned difficult to go back.
