They have special concrete anchors for that, but I always figured if I were 
going to put a lift in a new garage I'd use giant U bolts cast into the 
concrete, and the area around the posts would be 3x as deep as the rest of the 
pour. Those U bolts would have to be very accurately positioned though.

Yes lumber is what I use also. Sections of 4x8 and 4x10 left over from
house framing. I also make ramps out of it.

I will say that getting up and down off the ground all afternoon is good
exercise...but a lift is the only really civilized way to do things.

My buddy the timber framer has given me a bunch of cutoffs that make great 
cribbing under the car once jacked up. Stack some of those under the frame. It

Or turn the car upside down. :)

And while all those jobs need a jack, I would offer that brake
pads, wheel bearings, and such don't require being _under_ the
car.

I think I read he had some particular form of pancreatic cancer, 
somewhat rare.  I'll ask The Expert on such things, see what she says.  
I recall she was talking about this a few months ago, can't remember 
what she said.

years ago, she was gone within 2 weeks.
