From the way our BRV has rusted on the driver's side and not on the
passenger side, it seems the impact of ice, snow, and salt being thrown
against the side by a passing snow plow makes rust more likely.

You didn't keep it well enough oiled?

Difficult, I know, but spraying the heck out of it with oil of some sort
every fall certainly helps if you plan to drive it in winter weather.

I tried a whole lot of different things on my old Suburban. I used AT
fluid, Chainsaw bar oil, used engine oil, etc on the bottom and under
the fenders on the Suburban. Some was more successful than others but
all wore off over winter. I also used rubber conveyor belting in the
rear wheel wells to prevent the snow and crud from being thrown up into
the rear bumper etc. I had the rear AC lines corrode twice before I put
the rubber belting in to control the distribution of salty snow etc.
After that, the aluminum lines survived until I sold the truck.

With my current F150 I have had it sprayed by a shop that uses the Krown
rustproofing system every fall before the snow comes. They spray the
underside and in the doors etc. The oily, waxy fluid does not smell as
bad as some of the oils that I used to spray under the Suburban.

I have also used Fluid Film on vehicles to spray inside doors etc. It
has a bit of a peculiar smell at the outset and is not appreciated by my
wife.

I still mourn the demise of my /8 220D. Other than the floor cancer and other
tin worm issues, she was a joy to drive. Manual, no options, just worked. I
did take her on the freeway quite a bit and she had no issue keeping up with
traffic and even hit her near redline of 84mph for ten miles on a barren
stretch of road. She was much happier at 70.

I think there’s something special about these plain janes cars. Simple,
nothing to do but enjoy the suspension, interior quality, feeling of the
gearshift, sound of the engine... and enjoy the idea of a simple, slow, low
option car built with exceptional quality that can continue running for 50
years that will never be made again by any manufacturer.

If you want power windows go buy a hyundai!

Easily worth $10k.

Re: [MBZ] Local 1970 220 doing well on BAT

2020-02-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Hard to say. You can’t get much more basic and “blah” than a W114 with nothing
on it. Only thing that would have detracted more would be if it had been a
diesel. I wouldn’t mind a diesel, but I believe a lot of people think they’re
real slugs and unsafe on modern roads - like a 240D!

Not a lot of love for the W114 chassis cars, I think, unless it’s a coupe. And
even those don’t seem to do all that well.

I wonder what he hoped to get? I would have thought $6600 was a pretty
good price for a very basic 4 cylinder gas engine car. No AC, no
sunroof, no power windows etc. I know some folks would think that was a
plus but I would think that generally, people prefer cars that are
pretty well loaded.

RNM, looks to be an unresponsive seller. A major faux paux on BaT if you’re
planning on getting a good price.
