Re: [MBZ] MB value/pricing

2010-02-19 Thread LarryT

Hi Donald -
These cars are wonderful when in good condition. Some say they are the
best built big sedans ever made by MB. But the cost to repair these
beauties are incredible! Some would say astronomical. I had a customer
with a convertible like the sedan you saw. During the crazy years of the
80s when prices for neat cars went crazy, he spent around $170K restoring it
after paying $35K for it. But the prices kept climbing until he was
*almost* finished writing the checks for the work he'd had done. He was in
it for $205K when it became worth *maybe* $45k almost overnight. He was not
a happy camper - much like the people who bought homes for $300K and
financed them for $400K only to learn they were worth $200K.

Things like this keep happening - you just need to look a history...

BTW - look at the front bumpers - the chrome part that curves around and
points to the front wheel/tire should not be sagging and pointing slightly
upward - if they are, the bumper support is rusted out and needs to be
replaced. There are several things like that on these cars...

So, while that W108 280SEL 4.5 is a great looking car and people no
doubt look past the work needed - you can buy cars like these with rust
showing all day long for $2K. I owned 2 of them BTW.

Subject: [MBZ] MB value/pricing

My Indy just got a 1972 280SEL 4.5 and wonders what the value/prices are
on these cars.

It is White with the Blue roof (with a sunroof which seems pretty rare).
Engine and transmission work well. The interior is quite clean, and the
seats have been redone. But, they have been done in cloth and it looks
like the cloth is really nice, but I doubt it is correct to the period.
The wood around the dash looks bad and will have to be replaced. The body
is decent except that it has rust in the rear fenders and wheel arches.
It might have rust in the trunk (I didn't check, but don't they all). The
blue paint on the roof is bad and there is one small spot of rust that has
is BAD. It is has created a hole in the roof. The headliner is sagging
down and looks bad. Rear bumper is nice. Front headlight bezels have a
lot of surface rust in the chrome.

So, what is this thing worth? Mechanically, it is in good shape. Body
wise, it needs work.

He has a PERFECT 71 or 72 280SEL with the 4.5 and knows that it is worth a
LOT of money. But, what about this thing?

2005-08-20 Thread Fred De Vries
Found a 1989 420 SEL with 120K on it sitting in a guy from India's driveway,
somebody who works at his 7-11 tried to fix an oil leak for him,(he say's),
and after changing fluid and pan they hooked some wires up wrong (sounds
like tranny,I say's), It doesn't run right. Runs fine for a while, then
starts chugging.. long story short... I can buy the car for $500. Just
don't know what I'm getting into. I took pictures if anybody wants to see
it and offer an opinion. Thanks!
