Re: [MBZ] Mechnical interest/aptitude is not inherited
Accept it, Allen. I’ve got two boys (men, really), one of which has no interest in cars or even maintaining then, it’s just transportation from point A to point B. However, when tasked, he’s actually done his own repairs, but that was during a fairly short period of time a few years ago and has not occurred since. Not sure what the impetus was, but it apparently passed and has not returned. My youngest isn’t so much into cars, but he understands the value of maintaining his and is very good about conducting routine maintenance and even repairs when they’ve been necessary. He has a good grasp of how internal combustion engines operate and could probably figure most things out with a combination of research and tinkering. It’s clearly not something that’s a part of their DNA. I don’t fret about it too much. I just offer to assist when necessary and gladly offer insight and advice whenever they’re looking over my shoulder when they pass by in the garage and I’m working. Our generation was a lot different in so many ways, I just accept it as a generational thing and do my best to kindle anything in the way of interest when it pops up. -D > On Oct 13, 2020, at 8:54 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Oldest boy was driving the Focus home tonight. The computer on those cars does what it can to help when they are overheated. As far as non-mechanically inclined children go, they drive Toyota's. I got tired of semi classic, but rusty benzes getting destroyed. Temperature got hot. He continued to drive. Temperature got hotter. He stopped and put what water he had in the reservoir (maybe a quart). He noted steam escaping from the left hand side of the engine. He got back in and drove home. I go out to try to refill the coolant, and now it's just pouring out around the flange of the thermostat housing. I swear I eyeballed the reservoir tank when I replaced the alternator a few weeks ago and it was fine. Hoping it's just a failed gasket. The zetec engine supposedly has some protection that will shut down cylinders to pump air through the engine if it's getting too hot. Hopefully that still works. I was rebuilding engines at age 16. This kid hardly understands how an engine works and doesn't seem interested to learn. Which is fine, not everyone is into that stuff, but it's a little weird how different he and I are. On the other hand, my son self-taught on how to transplant a 6 liter engine + megasquirt into his Mazda Miata. I can barely change the oil and only attempt "light" repairs/maintenance.
