Pull the motor. You can probably just weld the bosses solid again and
redrill them. Or find a junkyard motor and swap it out.

The last two times I hired a specialist to do something I didn't have 
the proper tools for, they buggered it far worse than I could have 
properly dreamed of. The one I remember best, I spent 4x as much time 
taking it to them as it would have taken me to do it myself, and they 
considered the damage they did to be proper work. That was over 20 years 
ago, and it was the last straw for me.

That's what he was trying to do.  Blew threw the sides of two
of the three bosses that needed drilling/coiling.

This is why I learned to replace delivery valve seals myself. I paid $1000 once 
to have dv seals replaced on my '85 190D. It cost so much because the guy 
screwed up on his first try.

That was when I decided "Why pay somebody else to screw up things that I can 
screw up perfectly well myself?"

Terrible that you cannot trust so-called professionals to actually be that.

I am not sure what the answer is, other than going by local reputation. But 
even that isn't a guarantee. I had a supposed "good" local shop return a car to 
me with no hose clamps on the new hose they had installed as part of a job to 
replace a water pump and thermostat. I have had tire shops return cars with the 
wheel nuts loose. I have had cars returned and found tools left in the engine 
compartment. Very simple things, yet they overlook them. I hate to imagine what 
happens on more complex jobs.

My impression of BMW is "overengineered, gratuitous complexity" that is 
wonderful until it needs repair.

Some would say the same about MB of course, but I think BMW does it to an even 
greater degree.
