Re: [MBZ] OT: Tesla Crash Rains Flaming Batteries into Nearby Homes
It is taking off. Accepted a patient from El Centro on Sat; they are swamped and transferring overflow patients to other area hospitals. ER doc there said it is just like the Spring wave all over again. We were down to under 30 in house before this wave started. Today we are at 70 total. I admitted a few over the weekend. No travel for the holidays; parents hunkering down in AZ, us here. Local family invited us, but h@#$ no. I got a minor cold somehow recently but tested negative. Nanny's 17yo son got covid so she is out for a couple weeks. Kid's coach also got it, so that is two exposures pretty close to home recently. I worry more about it in the community than I do at work. At least at work we know who has it and who doesn't. Probably equal risk at work is catching it from other healthcare providers in breakrooms at lunch. There have been some hospital outbreaks like that. For the active covid patients everyone tries to limit interactions and take full precautions with. Steroids help a bit; the people I see are the 30-60 year olds who need facemask O2 but are not sick enough to need the ICU. If they worsen on high flow 02 despite proning etc or if they are tenuous with risk factors we send them to ICU for positive pressure ventilation. So far we have enough beds for that. We are not overwhelmed but the way cases are spiking we are likely set to hit new records. Whether we will need to cancel elective surgeries again depends on what the census does. We have more contingency plans in place now for flipping over to high volumes of covid patients, so that part will be less stressful than the Spring. Basically this disease is going to keep kicking our butts until we get serious about controlling it. Vaccine will help but will take time. Noem in my home state of South Dakota seems to have hitched her wagon to the wrong star, which is too bad. My sister has it up there right now and her husband just got it from her. Some governors just have to pee on the fence for themselves I guess. Noem is from Watertown, which is close to where my Dad is from. I thought she was OK but this is what you get when you manage communicable disease as a political problem instead of a public health problem. My cousin says a lot of his employees won't go to stores that require masks, even to pick up parts or whatever for him. It would be funny if so many people weren't dying. Lots of older folks in those smaller towns are getting wiped out. Someone else's bed, but I think everyone forgets that regular cars burn up pretty frequently. It happened to my sister's Pontiac t6000 in college; she had enough time to pull over, open the hood and then grab her wallet off the dash board before it was too hot to get near ther car. The melted front bumper puddle is still a piece of wall art on her house. I never thought of the battery pack as an energy-absorbing component of the chassis, but mass is generally your friend and the safety benefit of this low slung 1200 lb object needs to be factored in.
