I wouldn't have taken the pump housings apart, I would have just dropped the 
new unit in.
It looks like it's got an improved pickup system with springs to hold it 
against the bottom of the tank. 
If something doesn't work, then you can take everything apart and swap motors. 
All you've lost is two minutes to drop it in and whatever time you spent 
testing it.

I assume not. AFAIK common rail is for direct injection systems. 
First gasser common rail I know of is the 2008 Cobalt SS.

That's what I'm seeing at RockAuto. $60 and up for complete assembly. 
Motorcraft is about $200.

Pump and seal kits start under $20 if you want to stick a new pump in the old 
housing. 
The TYC pump I bought for the Taurus came with new pickup screen, sort of like 
a lantern mantle. 
 
Probably about the same as the 1990s Taurus. Drop the tank with two heavily 
rusted bolts, unhook all the pipes and wiring harness, find something to turn 
the pump lock ring enough to get it loose from the tank...

Hope it has less than 1/2 tank of gas in it.
