FWIW my 95 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) has always had a whiny PS pump.

Might want to ask these guys... http://www.ford-trucks.com/ Very good

Change the fluid before changing the pump. If the fluid is gray, you
will need to change pump and flush the steering box though.

Try here. El-Cheapo to OEM quality parts for your domestic auto. You make

Good point. The fliud looks good, and doesn't smell burnt, but I'll
change it anyway. I wonder if it has a filter -- might have to find a
book, there must be a trip to the library in my future.

I wondered if it was "normal" for a Ford - or non MB vehicle.

Since the original factory unit has less than 50K miles on it, I'd be
wary of one from a bone yard.

You nailed it.
A ford truck where the power steering pump doesn't whine at least a
little, is a pretty rare thing.

I was thinking the same thing. You should hear a new Bentley
Continental at idle and full lock. Sounds just like an F-150.
