Re: [MBZ] OT Home and auto insurance

2021-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In my case it was a couple of life policies. No problem moving auto policies to
the best of my knowledge, but that’s been interstate moves. If you’re local
maybe they won’t let them move stuff around, I don’t know. All I know is that
when I pulled the plug on my agent I told SF (corporate) that I would cancel my
life policies before I would let my (old) agent manage them. I told them the
agent I wanted to handle them and they sent me some forms where I made an
attestation that I wanted them moved.

Somebody who moved to Charlotte wants to use my Farm Bureau agent, but
FB says he's the property of his old agent in Lansing and won't transfer
his account. He doesn't have any problem with his agent, just no longer

Yeah, it was ten years ago, so it’s moot now. I know the agent, who used to be
a family friend before they screwed us (which kind of doubled up the suckyness
of the whole situation) got their bag slapped by State Farm. The new guy I went
to just to service the life policy said that he had never seen a policy taken
away from the agent who wrote it. He seemed in awe of us because we pulled this
off. We told State Farm corporate that they either reassigned the policy to an
agent of our choice or we would cancel it.

you should get in touch with the state insurance regulator, for whatever

Re: [MBZ] OT Home and auto insurance

2021-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had State Farm for nearly three decades until my agent decided to screw me
over. Pretty sure I've detailed this here before, but long story short, when we
returned to Florida from Indiana in 2011 my auto insurance was nearly
$10k/year. I balked but started paying it. I also started shopping, only to
find that State Farm, in collusion with my agent, was charging me nearly double
what it would cost from any other carrier under the guise of “Florida rates
going up a LOT since you left.”

When I confronted them with competitor’s quotes they were all ready to “put a
pencil to paper and see what we can do.” I promptly told them that after 30
years of business I expected the best and lowest price they could offer right
out of the gate, and since they didn’t give me that, I was bailing. I did, to
Allstate, and I’ve never looked back.

I went so far as to wrest a life insurance policy away from my former agent and
have it assigned to another (new) agent I vetted in advance. This is highly
unusual and takes an edict from corporate, or so I was told. Interestingly, the
new agent, a nice guy who knows the story and understands my position, hit me
up for a shot at our auto policies a couple years ago. I told him “OK” and let
him have at it. He came back and said that my application was refused. He
didn’t know why, he says they submit stuff to the underwriters and then get a
response without an explanation.

Guess I pissed them off badly enough they don’t want my business any more. Fine
by me.

Re: [MBZ] OT Home and auto insurance

2021-04-13 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Liberty is in the class of company (Family) I will avoid like plague. Mostly
because their drivers have impacted my cars, causing expensive damage and their
adjusters and whole method is to screw over the aggrieved party by holding out
for as long as possible, creating all manner of inconveniences, such that after
five weeks of getting nowhere, you just cave and have your own policy cover the
damage. You end up out your deductible, have the car off the road for months,
and feel poorly about the whole mess. Whichever umbrella company liberty falls
under, their insureds have taken out the w124, caused mass damage to the w220,
and caused the w126 SD to be totaled, tried to have it hauled away after hours
from the body shop, and I ended up footing the bill out of pocket to get them
to back off, contacted personal injury lawyer to get after them, and ratted
them out to state insurance commissioner, who penalized them over multiple
illegal actions. I had to use my own coverage for the extensive medial claims,
and their adjusters hounded me to close out the claim, even though there is a
three year window for addressing the bodily harm.

If you do not mind having criminals insuring your belongings, get liberty. I
am sticking with USAA

Has anybody had Liberty Mutual or State Farm?  So far it looks like it
is coming down to those 2?  I need to verify if the Liberty numbers are
real though as the home owners number almost seems to good to be true.
I will still probably see if I can find an independent agent to work
numbers for me and will see what USAA has to say before doing anything.
I suppose I could also do a phased approach and keep my primary home and
autos with USAA for now and just move the rental house somewhere else
and see how it goes.  Most of these online quoting tools want you to
call them about rental houses and wont do an online quote.

One thing about insurers that feature low rates as their main selling
point (and I don't know if this applies to Geico in particular) is that
they will drop you like a hot potato the moment you have any kind of a
claim.

I'm with State Farm, they are not the cheapest but I've never had any
hassle from them, our local agent is easy to work with, and we've had a
few non-trivial claims over the years.
