Re: [MBZ] POS Wagon

2013-10-21 Thread Hendrik and Fay
I am in oztralia but can see from the pics that this car has been used
and abused.
As has been said, the only thing this heap might have going for it is a
relatively rust free body (although a dented and scratched one).
If there is any sort of rust starting to appear (bottom of rear windows
is a common spot on wagons) then this car is pretty much worthless.
In the world of old Benzes my view is that either the body is good or
the mechanicals are good, if both are bad then the car will suck up a
lot of money, which is better spend on a better example.
If this S123 is intended to be a winter beater or used out in the bush
as a workhorse, then yeah a rough body is not an issue and if you are
handy with spanners and on a first name basis with the local wreckers,
you can run this for not much money.
As a comparison, there is a fella here trying to sell an 83 280TE, which
has issues but is a seven seater, is registered and from a distance
looks OK, he is asking 600 oz beans.
Speaking of which, it also seems to be missing the rear headrests, this
seems to be a common thing with the wagons, mine where missing, the PO
did manage to find one and I modified some out of a 126 to fit. Don't
these people realise that headrests are a safety item, or will they
figure it out when the rear passengers have snapped necks?

He is. I looked at the ad too, though and I would concur.

Ad copy "new fan needed for heater and a/c; needs new alternator & new
battery;" and "recently serviced suspension system; regular maintenance
has been performed, including oil changes, filters, belts, shocks, fluids,
and brakes."

So they fixed the really easy stuff with URO trash parts (that will need
replaced again, soon) and left the expensive stuff for you to fix. All for
the bargain price of $3500. No thank you. $1500 is being too generous.

It does look like trouble, indeed.

The spots on the back of the seats are odd: oil? mold?

What's with the Turbodiesel insignia on the tailgate?

Come out to the West Coast and you will find all the rust-free Mercedes you
want, along with plenty of other old cars you thought you'd never see
again. The Portland area is like the Island of Lost Toys for '70s and '80s
European and Japanese cars. When I lived on one side of Portland and
worked on the other, I used to see every day on my commute not just 123s,
116s and 126s, but also RX-7s, 240Zs, Alfas, air-cooled VWs of all kinds,
and the occasional Peugeot, just to name a few.

For the record, I agree with Hendrick. I would pass on that one. Engine
bay is filthy and how does a car that is rarely used get 260k miles?
Sounds like it has been sitting a long time after getting used hard.

Looks like trouble to me for that kind of money. Looks like a $1500 car to
me.
