Re: [MBZ] Picked up an 83 300TD needs vacuum pump and other issues

2007-05-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I can't keep track of which models are which year, but here is my
writeup of the VP replacement on Brunnhilde, 79 TD (123):

http://www.constructivity.net/rebuilding_the_vacuum_pump.htm

Everything you need to know! Note that I did this once, about a year
later the rubber diaphragm failed again. Not sure why, but the 2nd fix
has held up so far. 2 things make this easier -- clean the engine well,
esp the area around the VP, and remove the power steering pump (which
only takes a few minutes). Then you have clean access to the whole
deal, clean being really important as the engine is open to the oil
reservoir so you don't want trash falling in there. There are allen
head bolts that hold it on, gettting to them by contorting around the
PSP is not fun. Also, make the little jig as shown from some scrap wood
or something as it really helps in reassembly. The second time it was
maybe a 2 hour job, the fan and its little bolts with minimal access
being the most time consuming and finger scraping aspect. Also keep
track of which way everything comes apart and goes together so you get
it right.

I don't know if the VPs are the same on the SD and TD, but if you are
doing this job, taking the time, it makes sense to just get the parts to
make it new (like $40) and be done with it (one hopes).

Thanks Rich! My 83 is also a W123. That writeup is very helpful. I am
going to look at the 300SD to see how hard it is to take the stuff
apart..Looks pretty simple to me.

Here's a thought..Has anyone tried to replace the diaphragm by just
removing the front of the pump while it is still on the car? Looks almost
possible from the pics.I will find out when I pull apart the SD.

I'd like to buy the new parts but cannot afford the extra right now and I
have the parts car, and time.

Re: [MBZ] Picked up an 83 300TD needs vacuum pump and other issues

2007-05-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I re-read my web page, and Hans sent along the info on his SD which
appears to have a different VP but maybe his is a different model or
something. You might be able to do the change with the pump on the car
(I did not think of that), but once you are at the stage to do that,
taking it off, cleaning it all up, and putting it back will take only a
little time longer, plus you can do it on the bench.

Re the parts, the diaphragm is just a sheet of rubber with the proper
holes cut, some guy told me once he has fixed them with just rubber
sheet like for gaskets. I have some EPDM rubber roofing material scraps
(tough stuff) that looks an awful lot like what the stuff is on the
diaphragm. I did consider that...

2007-05-06 Thread Mike Canfield

Peter,
You are right on the money. I got looking further and found a
jerry-rigged vacuum fitting(the one with the check valve in it). It is
repairable with some seal all.

Thanks all, Mike

An 83 will have a piston type pump, not a diaphram (those were pre-76,
I think).

A sudden failure is more likely a broken vacuum line than a bad pump,
although a broken spring on a check valve will cause sudden failure.

I'd check for a big crack in the plastic section of the vacuum line and
for a bad brake booster before changing the pump.
