Re: [MBZ] R.I.P. LORAN

I have no idea. The generators at this site are fairly large (300kW) and will
most likely remain in place in the buildings they occupy.

So, all the Loran stations will be off line? I used to publish a book
containing all the lat/long for all buoys/markers along the US coast for
boaters using Loran for navigation. Once GPS became affordable it put me
out of business as the GPS units typically contain the info I provided.
Now, all the Loran units sold are paperweights it seems

Re: [MBZ] R.I.P. LORAN

2010-02-13 Thread LWB250
Hard telling. Consider that this site is 1000 miles inland.

We didn't have anything to do with the transmitter, obviously. There were
(are) two 300kW generators there, and I suspect everything in the place was
backed by them, so there would have been plenty of other loads besides the
transmitter. There could have been some redundancy, too, but I've never been
to the site so I don't know the details.

Interestingly, it's right down the road from the Army depot that incinerates
nerve gas and other nasty stuff they have been taking out of the arsenal.
