Re: [MBZ] Removing Painted Pinstripe
I'd assume you can just compound it off... if its faded, it almost gone anyway. My W123 had a faded strip too... I need to repair a dent in the front fender first, but I'm looking forward to having the stripe redone. I know if this had been a stick on pinstripe I could have had it gone in short order with some of 3M's wonderful chemicals, but being that it is paint, I suspect it is there for the duration. Anyone? Rubbing/polishing compound while being careful to watch what's happening to nearby paint - careful not to take too much - Goldilocks it - take just the right amount. Re: [MBZ] Removing Painted Pinstripe
Try your local auto paint supply house. Ask for their pinstripe remover wheel. It is a soft rubber wheel about the same as a #2 pencil eraser with a mount to chuck it in a drill. The soft rubber will neatly take the pinstripe off as you run the wheel against it without damaging the under paint. The under paint will have a slight scuff which can be polished out. You will possibly notice some color difference from fading if the base coat has faded from sun because the second layer of the pinstripe will have protected somewhat... I've used the wheels a number of times to do just what they are intended to do, with great success. Not really very expensive. Last one I bought was about $20 for the whole kit. Grant... Sounds like a 3M product. I have an account with my local auto paint supplier, so I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they have it. Thanks! It's always been my understanding that those are designed specifically to remove the cheap imitation paintstripe stickers that dealers love to stick on cars, rather than actual paint, but I'd love to hear that I'm wrong! Re: [MBZ] Removing Painted Pinstripe
As I look at these online it does appear that is the case, although I'll ask my local auto paint supplier for their recommendation. This is a painted pinstripe, NOT a tape or stick-on one. Those I could deal with - I already have what's necessary to remove them... Re: [MBZ] Removing Painted Pinstripe
Actually I would ask them if there is a chemical cocktail that will remove sign painters One Shot. I am almost positive pinstripes painted with that (and most are painted with that) can be removed with a solvent that will not damage the paint underneath. You could ask your local sign painter what he uses, too. These guys say oven cleaner... http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/remove-enamel-lettering-truck-95561.html http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/anyone-know-how-remove-pinstripes-158250.html Of course you could ask here. http://www.1shot.com/ Rick Sent from my iPhone On Jul 1, 2012, at 5:26 PM, Dan Penoff lwb...@yahoo.com wrote: Sounds like a 3M product.
