Yes the older Saturns were remarkably good cars. They feel cheap as hell but they just keep ticking. Kari’s has about 155K and she’s changed the oil religiously every 3K miles since new. She wants to get a few years old BMW X3 and will probably just keep the Saturn which will then do winter duty to spare my 240D. Most indys recommend you replace it all, because the fact the bearing feels smooth after one belt doesn't mean it will last through the second belt change interval. The first US built cars with the Ecotec engine were the 2000 Saturn L series. Midway through 2003 they put bigger chain oiling orifices in them. You could buy an upgrade kit with new chain, tensioner and oil orifice for around $100 IIRC. Fatty seemed mostly mad that nobody told him he needed the upgrade kit until it was too late. Fatty's mom had a stick shift L series Saturn IIRC, and she apparently drives like me. The problem was, if you didn't wind the engine up high enough to hit max oil pressure, you didn't put enough oil on the chain. It was hard to do with an auto transmission, but if you had a stick and shifted at 2000 rpm, and didn't do much high speed driving, you could kill the chain in about 80,000 miles. I think MamaFatty got 80-90k out of hers. Anyway the first three years of 2.2L Saturns and the same engine in the Alero and Grand Am were susceptible. The Cavalier/Sunfire got the engine as an option in 2003, so some of the early J bodies had the problem too. Stick to 2004 and later model years and you don't have to worry about it. I've got the same engine in my stick shift 2007 Saturn, and drive like a grandmother, but there's nothing wrong with the engine after 219k, the last 33k driven by me. But mine came with the high volume chain oiler, I only use synthetic oil, and it's geared to do 2700 on the highway. I think the early ones were geared taller. Bearing failure or maintenance failure? Most timing belt issues are maintenance failures, but I remember a friend of mine complaining that her 87 Escort broke its belt at 35k miles and less than a year of almost all freeway driving. Yes you're right, that's not normal, but the warranty expired 23,000 miles ago so you're stuck. At least the 1.9L Escorts weren't interference valve trains. Probably you can put 10,000 miles on the Subaru and sell it for nearly what you paid for it too. The big depreciation is done, it probably won't decline much now.I was considering one as a replacement for my Jetta but I can't stomach the mileage hit. Hey! Don’t be brand shaming. This is what Bob got after trying hard to find a nice W124/W123 without a lot of luck. He made the effort. Re: [MBZ] Subaru
Well, I own a 2017 Subaru Legacy, but have done nothing except air the tires and check the oil on it so far. I did work for a Subaru dealer in 1971 or '72 as a factory trained mechanic, but haven't touched one since. Re: [MBZ] Subaru Diesel
More specifically the laws require that Subaru make a California emissions model in a certain percentage in order to be eligible to market them in the whole country so they say "F" you USA. At least that is what I have heard... Subarus always seem to get a little worse mileage than same-size cars from other makes, I assume because of the four-wheel-drive hardware and accompanying lower final drive ratios they use. I think the reason given for why they backed out from selling cars with the new diesel engine in the USA was the usual--our screwy emissions laws, especially in California. I bet the moment they get something diesel that can compete with Volkswagen mpg for the TDI, they will start importing it. I'd certainly give it a look.
