That could work.

I’m pretty sure I can slide the new one in from the interior side of the door.
I just have to get an idea of the profile so I get something that will fit or
at least occupy most of the space, the rest of which I can fill with caulk.

Use one of those flush cutting oscillating saws and cut it off flush with
the door jamb, then just set a new standard one in place, trimmed to fit. A
bit of caulk between what's left of the old one and the ends of the new,
and you're set to go.

Yikes. That’s a pretty severe approach for replacing a threshold. It’s under
the edges of the door frame and the stop molding on both sides, but if I cut it
out from the center I can pull the pieces out without damaging the frame. Once
it’s out I should be able to slip the new threshold in from the interior side.

How is the door jamb held in?
I would think the way to repair it would be to remove the whole door
frame and replace the threshold, and then re-install it.
You should be able to get an aluminum threshold so you won't have that
problem in the future.

If you have to take it out, saw it in two in the middle, and pull each half

the casing and fill the voids with foam and/or caulk.

Is it all that necessary, just between house and garage? Not exposed to weather? Can
you do some sort of "repair" (i.e., just rip it out?)

Threshold on the door into the garage from the house is rapidly deteriorating.
It has a weird plastic part that is unlike lots of thresholds where you can
replace the plastic or rubber part. This one wraps around the interior side of
the threshold and is sort of hard plastic. Definitely the original threshold,
so it's held up well considering the house is approaching 20 years old.

So I get ahold of Frost King, who is the manufacturer of the threshold.

"Can the insert on the Model XXX threshold be replaced?"

"No, the whole threshold must be replaced."

Holy mother of pearl. This thing is literally built into the door frame and
under all the casing. Getting it out is going to be a major PITA.

Planned obsolescence, I say.
