Yes.  They weren't all transversely mounted, though.  The VW Dasher and 
VW Vanagon both had diesel versions, and used longitudinal mounting.

Yes, unless you count the diesel design study Porsche did for VW back
in the early 50's.  It was a diesel powered flat four in a split
window Beetle.  I think only two were made.
