What should the volt reading across the battery be when the engine is
running?

Make sure the wiring to the alternator is good -- no battery voltage
to the coil will get you zero output, it's not a generator!

Re: [MBZ] Volt Reading Across Battery

2013-09-16 Thread Richard Hattaway
I have to ask.. Did you get the alternator from Trent??

OK, fun over... although you have all the info, we have almost none.. why did
it get replaced?  Do you know the battery is good ( I kinda doubt it, but I'm
not there ) .  Have you checked the meter or repeated the measurment with
another meter?   LIke someone said, wired wrong, no output.  However it's
really tough to wire these wrong since they are self excited and use the only
other terminal they have to tell you when it's charging with a bulb on the
dash.  So what does the bulb say?? Or if your bulb is mute, what does it tell
you when you turn on the key.. then start the engine.. ( if you can start it on
10+ volts.  Light on, then light off when the engine starts??   I doubt it...
but...

Most batteries float at 12+.  Not much +, a little.  A battery at 10+ is an
issue.  Unless it's being drug down to that level by a stupendous load ( like
all the lights on, the glow relay contacts welded, and the starter hung ) then
I'd say you got a bad battery.  But I don't know.. I'm not there.

Finally figured it out it is the glow plug relay. After I start the engine,
volts across the battery was 10.45. And volts on the first glow plug was
12.6ish. Then I remove the fuse in the relay, volts are 13.8 across the
battery and 0 volts on the glow plug. Bam!
Now I have to find a relay.

i get the $300 part. i'm trying to figure out a cheaper alternative.

the even scarier part is once those $300 stribels are gone, benz will own
all of them and they will be 4 figures

i personally liked the preglow time system where you pulled a knob on the
dash. but i'd have probably opposed the electric starter as well!

Re: [MBZ] Volt Reading Across Battery

2013-09-17 Thread Richard Hattaway
Although the relay is involved, you need to revisit the diagnosis.

My concern is that having 12+ on the plug and 10+ at the battery says you are
creating energy somewhere.  Einstein says this can't happen.  The
battery/alternator are the source in the system, everything else is downhill.
Go back and remeasure.  Also feel around for warm wires, etc.  If it's the
relay, about the only thing it can do wrong is not time out or have main
contacts that are welded together.

Finally figured it out it is the glow plug relay. After I start the
engine,

volts across the battery was 10.45. And volts on the first glow plug was
12.6ish. Then I remove the fuse in the relay, volts are 13.8 across the
battery and 0 volts on the glow plug. Bam!
Now I have to find a relay.

I have one I think, if I can find it...

You could also just wire in a solenoid and a button in the dash. Thats what my
240D has, its pretty handy when its very cold, I can make the car glow as long
as I want.

Re: [MBZ] Volt Reading Across Battery

2013-09-17 Thread Jim Cathey

Gonna take a helluva switch to do the 50-80A DC reliably.
I'd be opening the GP relay for a look-see, maybe some
contact filing and/or resoldering. Also, make _sure_
that the purple line from the ignition switch doesn't
bounce up and down, like from a going-out ignition switch,
as that'll trip the rela¥ on as you drive. A shot of
Deoxit into the ignition switch, the electrical part,
would not go amiss.

You could try starting the car and then disconnecting
the _little_ GPR plug, see if that makes a difference.
If the problem goes away, then it might not be the
relay's fault at all.

Good point. If the signal wire (purple?) is intermittent, the relay would
properly keep resetting itself.

Re: [MBZ] Volt Reading Across Battery

2013-09-17 Thread Curt Raymond
Ford starter solenoid.

Remember to make the cables to the glowplugs big. When I first got mine they
were real small, I forget exactly, 16ga maybe. Surprisingly they didn't just
burn up but you had to glow a looong time. I rebuilt with 10ga (I think) which
is the biggest my crimper would support. I have some much thicker wire (2ga?)
but I've never gotten around to making more cables.

Now I have to find a relay.
