Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
Yep, I built an AM radio chassis once. I thought it would be easy. I used one of the circuit examples from an RCA tube manual. The radio played well enough but it did not sound near as good as any of the old radios I had on the shelf. Then I proceeded to blame the speaker cabinet and I wired the chassis into a cabinet that I had pulled a chassis out of. It was better but still not near as good as the others. I was in my early 20s back then and thought I knew better. We all make the same type of assumptions about the Mercedes Engineering compromises we deal with today. They were the experts in their world back then and still are today. We just follow along and learn from them and sometimes criticize. Kaleb, It’s a shame that no-one wants the old console stereos these days but I guess there's not a place for them in a modern household. I see console stereos for sale all the time for $35 - $45, some with very high end turntables installed. You need to plug yours in somewhere and play it. Console stereos from the early 60s were huge family purchases, not unlike the purchase of an expensive wide screen TV today. They were all expensive in the day and all have a wonderful sound. By the late 60s, most had turned into cheap junk, not because they had gone solid state but because the manufacturers had taken out so much cost. I see the same thing happening with today's TV and computer markets. Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
The one I was talking about is in storage right now. Sitting in my office I actually have 2. A VERY nice Magnavox ones I bought at a thrift store back in the late 80's I guess for $10. It has a really good sound although I have not turned it on in years. The woodwork on it is really nice. Last time I messed with it something was wrong with the radio tuner part, turning the dial you could not get the indicator to go all the way to the ends. The other console I have is a RCA, was my grandmothers. I used to go over to her house and listen to that thing all the time. I remember the last time I used it, was in the late 80's or early 90's, I was over there, turned it on, and a loud pop, and it never turned on again. I remember she had somebody come over and look at it and they said it needed new transistors. She never had it fixed. When she died, I of course hauled it to my house. I have never got around to seeing about having it fixed, but I really want to. Its not a fancy as the other one I have, but it has more meaning I guess. Remember back in the old days when you could go to Walmart, you showed them your old needle, they had a laminiated mat thing that had pictures of all the various needles to compare yours to so you would get the right one? Heck, they even used to sell vacuum tubes there and even had a tester. Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
I have an SX-780 Pioneer receiver that's still hanging on... I know it's not a tube unit, but its longevity has amazed me, especially since I haven't taken very good care of it over the last 10-15 years... Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
I just looked at mine and it is an SX-727, no tubes in it. It does have a crackle in one channel occasionally, back in the 80s I took it to a shop, they let it run a coupla days and never heard it burp, brought it home, 20 min later it crackled, still does it occasionally. Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
i find a lot of the old vacuum tube radios sound really great even though they are just one big speaker and that's it. On Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 2:12 PM, Kaleb C. Its amazing actually, a friend of my grandmothers gave that thing to me in 1983, when I was in the 3rd grade. I still have it although I have not played it in years. Re: [MBZ] Was Cameras, now Vacuum Tubes
That's usually a sign that it needs new string to turn the tuning cap (or inductor). Not very hard to replace. Last time I messed with it something was wrong with the radio tuner part, turning the dial you could not get the indicator to go all the way to the ends. -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games. - Ernest Hemingway '90 300D (Rattled), '92 300D (Saber), ''97 Ply Grand Voyager (Vincent van-go) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
