Hopefully you get a seal that has not aged on the shelve for the last 20 years. I got a hood pad that fell apart within a month. Re: [MBZ] Water leaking into trunk- '87 300SDL
checked trunk seal, appeared good, however it was easily removed, and pulled out of groove without any difficulty, so it would seem that it is not sealed good enough for water. Wondering if I have to remove old glue on the rubber before applying a coat of the flowable silicon sealant, and if so, how would I remove that glue without damaging the seal/rubber. There are no cracks or tears in the rubber seal and it appears in good shape so should be able to simply re-glue and install again. Re: [MBZ] Water leaking into trunk- '87 300SDL
Don't cheap out. Get a new one. The glue isn't there to keep the water out, though it will if you use glue on the top and bottom of the old seal and glue the trunk shut. :-) It's kind of like a garden hose which has a rubber washer to seal the connection against leaks. IF the connection isn't tight enough the rubber washer will leak even if you take it out and glue it in on one surface. Tighten the connection and the leak stops even without the glue. The pressure of the rubber between the metal of the lid and the frame is what keeps the water out and if it isn't enough, water will seep through like it is now because the old seal has taken a set since it's been sitting in the squished closed position for the last 20 or 30 years. New rubber has more resistance against compression thus making the seal tighter which will keep water out better. Re: [MBZ] Water leaking into trunk- '87 300SDL
My guess would be that the old seal will be fine unless it appears deformed. My car has the same issue. The trunk seal is there but is not glued in at all. I am guessing the previous owner got a new seal when the car was painted but never got to installing it properly. I have not yet glued it in for a number of reasons including prorcastination. The other reason is that there is a spot that needs a touch up of paint. I need to remove the rubber and sand and paint a spot that shows surface rusting before I glue the thing in. So long as I keep it properly arranged, it seems to be fine but if I open and close the trunk a few times without checking it, then it seems to creep a bit and I get leaking into the trunk. So, in my case I think the seal will be fine and I am guessing the same for you unless there is something visibly wrong with the seal. Randy On 29/07/2013 2:01 PM, MG wrote: Don't cheap out.
