Re: [MBZ] Who was it that replaced their #1 rod?
Looked the same. A bit heavier, don't recall how much. According to the dealer, there had been several updates to the rod. Each one heavier than the last. Numbers on the piece were different. I lost a hard drive since then and don't have the numbers anymore. -Dave Walton On Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 7:47 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: > Was it with one of the updated improved rods? H Y L O M A R The torque instructions say to use "wet" head bolts. Lubricate them with motor oil just before tightening. You want the resistance to come from bolt stretch, not friction. -Dave Walton On Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 5:58 PM, Michael LaFleur wrote: > All the rods have to be with a certain number of grams in weight from each > other. All the rods have to be with a certain number of grams in weight from each other. I can't remember what it is exactly. My book is a couple of thousand miles away. Did you remove one of the others to balance the new one? I reused the head bolts on my OM603.961 rebuild and they were all within spec. A few months later I found coolant in my #5 cylinder. I don't know if it was the head gasket (it looks good) or head bolts. I replaced just the #1 rod at 180,000 miles. It's just over 228,000 now. So far, so good. That was on my 94 S350. Pulled engine and trans as a unit. Two or three of the head bolts were out of spec and replaced. Others were okay.
