You know, I love my 126 SD, I loved my 123 TD, and I wouldn't mind having a 124. But I'm not sure I'd have a new MBZ, even for free. IMO, reputation was (and WAS is the operative word here) Mercedes' strongest asset. One story like this overrides hundreds of positive reports. Major engine failure with less than 200K miles is just unacceptable for a modern car with scheduled maintenance. But I'm sure MBUSA isn't interested in my opinion. Many did have issues though (usually just outside of the warranty, IIRC) & I'm not sure if a definite answer of why this was occurring has ever been found out. The only theory I know that explains the fact that #1 rod is almost always the first to fail is head gasket failure and oil going into cylinder #1. OM601/602/603 always tended to get head gasket leaks at the front, the larger bore of the 350 seems to increase the likelihood of the oil going into the cylinder instead of outside the engine. Either way you would need to update the rods unless the 200k car has already had the job done. then I would get the higher mileage car. Of course Rusty has great parts. You either move the entire engine & wiring harness (if going 126 to 126) or pull the IPs, manifolds, etc, and keep everything with the car but the engine. All those bits are newer on the 350 anyway, no need to replace them with 1987 parts.
Re: [MBZ] Rod Bender
That's probably the case for the vacuum/boost controls upstream of the wastegate, but the version I have had a boost hose running directly from the turbo to the wastegate, and it allowed me to run over 16 psi boost--that is, before it began dumping copious amounts of oil into my exhaust stream (long story - bad rebuild). It's definitely a later model turbo because it doesn't have the ARV incorporated into the inducer housing. But like you said, there are lots of little changes between the engine series. I suspect those challenges are easily overcome by determined DIY-types, but the engines aren't direct drop-ins in any case. The preglow system is different (not any big deal at all), the computer control is different, the EGR control is different, the wastegate is controlled differently, The ignition/fuel shutoff is electrical rather than just vacuum. There are LOTS of little things that MUST be addressed. They can probably all be solved, but it isn't a "slip-in" exchange. Like most of these transplants, if you have two side-by-side cars you just start swapping bits until everything fits again. Not a trivial undertaking, of course. -- Jim
