That's my favorite - but I have a car that the levers on the valves
broke off. And the valves from the parts car leak slightly.

Still - the whole system is so much more suitable to my style than
the automaniac. I had trouble with a thermistor on one and put in
a fixed resistor instead. That converted the temperature wheel
from a thermostat to a simple temperature control - but still
relied on the rest of the automaniac functions working correctly.

And the retro euro dials on the manual climate in the 240D is way cooler
looking. Form and function, a combo that can't be beat.

Re: [MBZ] was more jabba - noa ACC I Servo

2013-08-13 Thread Scott Ritchey

I'd agree w/ hursty but we don't all live in FL.

Actually, the ACC I servo tends to work OK except for the wet part (controls
coolant through heater core). I had a '79 TD that still used the electrical
and pneumatic circuits of the servo but a PO rerouted the heater core water
to bypass the servo and go through a manual valve to control flow. I just
opened the hood and adjusted the valve as needed when the seasons changed.
Eventually I restored all servo functions but the manual valve was not a bad
work-around.

Older manual climate 123s used a manual (cable operated) valve which would
be a great fix, IMO.

The weak points of the servo were the plastic chamber that cracked (due to
age plus thermal stress) and the O-ring that seals the shaft. There is a
metal replacement for the plastic chamber, and it's a good fix. But there
is no practical way to replace the o-ring, so when it goes, there is no way
to fix it and it usually damages the topside electrics.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] more jabba

this is a very good point. all of this stuff is because of the stupid temp
control and everyone just sets it to full blast and full blow anyway when
they are hot. what the hell use is an automatic system, particularly one
that sucks and breaks and now can no longer be fixed at reasonable cost?
