Re: Mersenne: More error info

Two or more errors and your chances are not good. There will be a major change in this area - since new versions run per-iteration roundoff error checking when close to FFT run length crossovers, there will be a fair number of _reliable_ results with multiple (automatically checked) roundoff errors. Perhaps the analysis should distinguish between runs where all roundoff errors were found to be false alarms, and runs where a roundoff error seems to have been a glitch. Analysis of the seven results in the bad database submitted on my account: 3 due to a failed CPU fan (on an old P100 system, running in an air-conditioned computer lab. One with detected roundoff errors, two without) 2 due to software bug in a recent alpha release 1 due to hard disk problem - almost certainly bad swap file I/O caused memory corruption on a busy system (without detected error) 1 (also without detected error) cause unknown. On Friday 30 August 2002 21:29, you wrote: Well, Win95 is getting increasingly uncommon (and for good reasons, stability and support for USB come to mind). Well - there are still a lot of older systems around which run Win 95 quite happily (some of them are even reasonably stable!) but which it isn't worth paying M$ upgrade tax on. Some simply don't have the resources to run Win XP, and some of the owners can't be persuaded to switch to linux (perhaps because they're corporately owned). Suggesting to people that their contribution isn't welcome because they're operating somewhere close to the trailing edge is another good way of discouraging participants. As for USB - I'm responsible for twenty-odd systems with hardware USB ports; only two of them have ever had USB peripherals connected. I may be unusual in this respect, but I don't think USB support is absolutely essential. In any case, later OEM versions of Win 95 contain the same USB support as Win 98. Yes, it is neat to be able to connect a printer to two systems simultaneously using both the parallel and USB ports! Mersenne: Switch from v.21.4 to v.22.8
I just switched from v.21.4 to v. 22.8 because of the error 29 message, and my ending date for the number it's working on jumped from 9-11 to 9-5, is v.22.8 that much more efficient than 21.4? This is on my Athalon processor. I have a pentiumIII I'm going to upgrade also, will it speed it up too? _ Unsubscribe list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers

Re: Mersenne: Still unable to communicate with server.
I got mine going last week except for one PC that looks to have an injured NIC. I did relocate one PC to a new home and it got the 29 even with HTTP switch... =1 That locatiuon does nto use a proxy and it is behind a firewall using NAT. So w/o a proxy am I stuck?? Why does the http not work when all the otehr toys work (browser, AIM etc)? thanks Sisyphus wrote: Hi, Recently started getting error 29 with Windows, PrimeNet version 21, so I've upgraded to version 22.8. Now I get error 2250 - so we're definitely making progress :-) 'prime.ini' contains 'UseHTTP=1'. And I've tried the stuff relating to proxies/firewalls mentioned in the faq (though this was not an issue with version 21). Still can't get a connection. Where to, now ? Re: Mersenne: Mime-Version: 1.0
HA! AH! i am on ver 21 spo that might be the ticket upgrade to ver 22 for the unit behind the new firewall.. George Woltman wrote: Version 21 seems to be back online.
