George said "The bug causes factors to be missed in the final stage of P-1 and ECM factoring." The way I read that is that stage 1 is OK, but *some* factors may be missed in stage 2 If that's correct, then any user whose system does not do stage 2 at all (because they've allocated no extra memory) should not rerun their stage 1. Even if it does, it's probably not worth rerunning the entire P-1 just to get a (possibly reduced) chance of finding a factor in stage 2 > Regards > Brian Beesley Daran _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers

I'd actually recommend not doing the P-1 again. If you are using enough memory to run both P-1 stages, then the bug did not affect stage 1 but did affect stage 2. If you run only stage 1 of P-1, then the bug would cause no factors to be found. In this case, you might consider re-running P-1 again as Brian suggests (but only if you used 22.10 dated after Sept 28). I did this on my own system & have been rewarded with _two_ factors found - This is way above expectations! Nevertheless, I'm always happy to get the factors. _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers

Re: Mersenne: Bug in version 22.10
Hi, One thing you might consider - when you change to v22.11, check out your results file. If you have a P-1 run logged on an exponent you haven't yet started LL/DC testing, make it run the P-1 again (change the ,1 at the end of the assignment line in worktodo.ini to ,0). If you are already running the LL or DC test, things are not quite as straightforward; I'd reccomend: For DC tests, if less than half done, force P-1 to rerun (as above) else just let it run on. For LL tests, if less than 1/3 done, force P-1 to rerun (as above). If between 1/3 and 2/3 done, change the test type from Test to DoubleCheck then force P-1 to rerun. (This makes the P-1 limits smaller - with a lower chance of finding a factor, but using less time). If more than 2/3 done, just let it run on. I did this on my own system & have been rewarded with _two_ factors found - one on an unstarted DC assignment, one on a DC assignment which was about 40% of the way through - there are still a few repeat P-1s running, too.
