Note that it's using the X11 backend.  Are you trying to run Weston
inside X, or do you mean to run it outside of X?  I'm guessing that
your baytrail-noemgd distro is broken, as that should mean it uses
xf86-video-intel with full GL support.

1st I am surprised by this. The splash screen is already enabled for crownbay 
BSPs.
So you should be seeing the splash screen with the default crownbay BSPs.

And yes it is possible to customize the splash screen as per your needs.
Check the psplash recipe and it's sources for more details.

The psplash should give you what you want. So I think there is no need to find 
a new
solution here.
