RE: Running MetaCard based CGIs

2001-01-25 Thread Simon Lord

It's up and running. I'm still piecing the site together which will
give everyone all the details and info about what mchhtpd does, how
it works etc. Unfortunately I spent this entire week renovating my
office to accommodate the every growing hardware required to do our
day to day jobs...soon, we promise.

Windows Question...

2001-01-25 Thread Richard MacLemale

On the Mac, you have type and creator settings to tell the Mac which app
created which file. On Windows, you have those 2 or 3 character DOS
extensions (MetaCard's being ".mc"). My question is this: If I create an
app for Windows, what do I do about the DOS extension? How do I know what
has and has not been used? What do I have permission to use? Apple has a
database online of creators. Does Microsoft have a similar database for
Windows and DOS extensions? Do I have to fart around with modifying the
registry? Yuck. Thanks in advance for any replies...

It's still a stack, located on the hard drive. The aiff files are very
large and being stored on and read from a CD.

MetaCard has the default 5 megs but as I understand it, QT will draw RAM
from the system as needed. Note that on my Macs, that 5 megs is enough
to produce flawless audio playback. It is only the client's machines
that have a problem. I've asked him to try running with only the base
extension set to see if there may be some other background operation
going on at the same time (like virus checking, for example) but I
haven't heard yet how that went.

No, these are just aiff files. No video. They are not displayed either;
the player object remains invisible.

AlwaysBuffer is false. I would think it was a processor issue too,
except that HyperCard can play these files just fine with the Movie
XCMD. It may be that the XCMD doesn't allocate as much time to other
processes though as MC does.

Then, Monte Goulding wrote:

> Would it be possible for you to post the script to the list.

The following script is what I wound up using. One thing that developers
may forget is that not only do users have a default browser but they have a
"currently running browser" which may or may not be the default. It would
be silly to launch IE if Netscape was currently active, and vice versa, so
the script tries to take this possibility into account and launches
appropriately. As mentioned above, this requires Tuviah's excellent
externals collection.

In our case, we knew that users would primarily use IE or Netscape, and
since Netscape appears to behave better than IE, I tested for Netscape first
and defaulted to IE if Netscape wasn't the default browser or running.

The global variable gLaunchBusy must be tested by any control making a call
to the browser launch handler; if the global is true then the call to the
handler should be canceled to prevent multiple DDE requests and possible
browser launch failures.

(Note: queryRegistry line is wrapped)

# BROWSER LAUNCH HANDLER
launchBrowser tURL
  launchDelayTimer
  put word 1 to -2 of queryRegistry("hkey_local_machine\software\
classes\http\shell\open\command\") into defBrowser
  # CHECK IF BROWSER IS ALREADY OPEN AND LAUNCH URL

  end if
if "Internet Explorer" is in ext_appsopen() then
ext_ddeexecute "IExplore","WWW_OpenURL",tURL
exit to metacard
  end if
  # LAUNCH BROWSER WINDOW
  launch tURL with defBrowser
if "already open" is in the result then
if "IExplore" is in defBrowser then \
   ext_ddeexecute "IExplore","WWW_OpenURL",tURL
else ext_ddeexecute "NSShell","WWW_OpenURL",tURL
  end if
end launchBrowser

on launchDelayTimer
  global gLaunchBusy
  set lockCursor to true
  set cursor to watch
  put true into gLaunchBusy
send "resetDelayTimer" to me in 2 seconds
end launchDelayTimer

on resetDelayTimer
  global gLaunchBusy
  put false into gLaunchBusy
  set lockCursor to false
  # THIS GOOFY WORKAROUND FORCES AN UPDATE OF THE CURSOR
  # WHICH DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY OCCUR ON SOME SYSTEMS
  get the screenMouseLoc
set the screenMouseLoc to item 1 of it + 1,item 2 of it + 1
end resetDelayTimer

Hope this is useful.

After 18 months of using Metacard on the Mac I'm just getting round to this

'Lesson 8' on this list is "Doing Menus in Metacard", which also includes

The rest of the MetaClass lessons are also excellent !!!

How much memory have you allocated to the app? or to Metacard if NOT
running as a standalone? I am using multiple movies and adding music and
get barely a hiccup when one stops and the other starts - while several
different videos are playing in succession. I've set my memory on my
standalones to 15000. Are you playing video at the same time? and if you
are, what is the rect of the video? This really sounds like a
processor/memory issue. Check and make sure the buffer of the player is
NOT set to alwaysbuffer. That's a pain!

You need to replace the forward slash with a backslash, or strangely it
will crash your computer(at least it did on NT4)

on mouseUp
  get
setRegistry("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MyProgram\shell\open\ddeexec\","[FileOpen(
%1]")
  get
setRegistry("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MyProgram\shell\open\ddeexec\application\"
,"EXT")
  get
setRegistry("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MyProgram\shell\open\ddeexec\topic\","My_T
opic")
end mouseUp

Free movable images and players

2001-01-25 Thread Sjoerd Op 't Land

Hello all,

Someone wants to step over to MetaCard from Delphi, but he wants to be sure
that one thing is possible in MetaCard before that.

He wants to have a text field in which you can 'insert' pictures and movies,
and move and scale them freely through space. A workaround is legal.

In a perfect world, MetaCard fields would accept 'real' HTML, but
unfortunately they don't. So, I thought of this workaround:
To have a hidden field which contains the whole text, and make other
fields over which I spread the text like this: (set your font to a
mono-spaced one, like Courier)
¬
| Field 1 |
| |
¬
| Image 1 | Field 2 |
| | |
| |---¬
| | Image 2 |
¬
| Field 3 | I| F |
| | 3| 4 |
-
This is everything but a neat solution, and it will stay to have some
bugs, and will be very difficult to program, but maybe doable.

Does anyone else have an other solution (workaround, external) for this?

Are there other with the same problem so that we can share the solution and/
or the work?

Regards and thank for any help in advance,
Sjoerd

Re: QT audio problem

Are you using "Idle" statements while it runs?

Creating Menus for the Mac OS

2001-01-25 Thread Gregory Lypny

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if someone could point me to where in the MetaCard
Reference I could learn about creating standard Mac menus (e.g., File,
Edit, ... ) which would appear at the top of the screen, as opposed to
the top of a stack. I found some material on Menu Panels, but there are
no examples.

 Regards,

  Greg
