I get the same blue screen with Mozilla 1.2.1 -- which is similar to

download and install a new browser to do it. Like me, they will just

You could run the stack file through the md5digest function to get a unique
value for the stack. But then there's the question of where you store the
value.

For my own apps I trap all messages that will affect data and set a uDirty
custom prop on the stack.

  put theOldOrder into theNewOrder

sort items of l by mySort(each)
put l & return after theNewData

You can do pretty much anything in MC. In this case, you can use a
custom function to sort the data.

P.S. I need to do it FAST on large variables, therefore a repeat
loop won't do.

The following works for me with very short lists. It does have a repeat
loop in it, so you'd have to see if it is fast enough for your needs. It
could probably be optimized better.

local theOldOrder,theNewOrder

on dosort
  put fld 1 into theData
put line 1 of theData into theOldOrder -- or whatever is the key line
  put theOldOrder into theNewOrder
sort items of theNewOrder ascending numeric
put theNewOrder & return into theNewData
  delete line 1 of theData
repeat for each line l in theData
sort items of l by mySort(each,l,theOldOrder, theNewOrder)
put l & return after theNewData
  end repeat
  put theNewData into fld 2
end dosort

function mySort theItem,theLine
  set wholematches to true
  put itemoffset(theItem,theLine) into theItemNum
put item theItemNum of theOldOrder into theOriginalItem
  put itemoffset(theOriginalItem,theNewOrder) into theNewPos
  return theNewPos
end mySort

I don't think you can do it without at least one repeat since we don't have

Let me chime in that there are two different aspects of using
valentina, each with its own level of complexity and learning curve.

1. Using valentina as a database engine in metacard -- quite easy and
not much to learn

2. designing and maintaining databases, particularly when taking full
advantage of relational features -- that can be easy or a can of
warms depending on your background and experience. But many issues
here have little to do with Valentina per se.

RE: Metacard beginner question

2002-12-04 Thread Shari
From my 'limited' understanding (correct me or slap me), most of the MC
programmers seem to be on UNIX/Linux/PC platforms and have been using it for
awhile -- heavy duty coders;-). MC seems to have a more robust (doesn't
crash) IDE, but without as many features. A lot of Mac users and newbies
prefer the more feature rich (and sometimes complicated?) IDE of RunRev.

Slap slap slap!
:-)

I chose MC and I'm on a Mac.

My understanding is that you can *do* the same things with MC or Rev.
You can build the same programs. Rev has added features to the
programming environment, but the basic functionality is the same for
both. You could just as easily roll your own in MC, if you choose.

At the time I made my choice, a year ago, MC was more stable. I had
too many crashes in Rev where I lost my code and had to rewrite it.
I've had crashes in MC, but I don't think I've ever lost the code.
That made the choice for me.

As for features in the IDE, if I can do what I want to do, the
features don't really matter. The one thing that Rev does do better,
is the help docs. That is my biggest gripe with MC. I am used to
much more detailed help docs, Hypertalk 2.2 being my programming
bible for so many years.

So we have the list (all of you :-) and the archives and a few
websites with some good info.

But then, you didn't say *all*, you did say *most*... :-)

MetaCard will quit without asking whether changes should be saved!

Scenario 2:

(1) Work on a stack (e.g. add buttons and text fields)
(2) Save the stack
(3) While the "Save" dialog is visible, hit command-q

MetaCard will quit instantaneously without having saved anything!

Am I the only one suffering from these fundamental problems?

If I am not, then how can you guys live with this?

Are these problems exclusive to Mac OS X 10.2.2?

These are very elementary bugs. In the next release they must have gone!
