This is a little off subject but you don't seem to have it very clear about open source software versus payed for, and support. I've been using both free operating system and software for more then I can remember and support was as good as metacard's which is the only not free one with still good support. All the tips we share on this list amount to free software. Most of the web that you use comes from free software: server, server side scripting, databases, browser, email, you name it. Doing some research before repeating Microsoft's mantra may prove beneficial to your mental health. This idea that you get what you pay for is so outdated that I'm surprised some people still remember it. Re: Fwd: altBrowser Question and MAC version of altBrowser...
I would absolutely be willing to pay for a multi-platform browser tool like this one accessible from RR/MC. The "free" access to a browser in MC isn't what I need; launching the user's browser rather than keeping the user in the context of my application isn't acceptable for much of my Web-centric development work. And I would prefer a product I pay for and which is therefore supported to a free, Open Source solution for which I'd be on my own for support. > >--On Monday, June 16, 2003 12:11:18 +1200 Rodney Tamblyn ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> >> Forwarded posting Chipp Walters, to use-revolution. Fwd: altBrowser Question and MAC version of altBrowser...
Forwarded posting Chipp Walters, to use-revolution. If members of this list are seriously interested in seeing a Mac external to display web content within a MC window, read on... R. Begin forwarded message: From: "Chipp Walters" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun Jun 15, 2003 10:23:19 AM Pacific/Auckland To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: altBrowser Question and MAC version of altBrowser... Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Edwin, First a bit of a background on altBrowser.DLL. I originally wanted this capability for a client of mine. I wished to build a custom browser with many set features, which also allowed his customers to navigate only to specific places. Upon asking around, it turned out Tuviah Snyder (of RR and MC fame) had already authored such a DLL. I asked him about it and found out it didn't do everything I needed, so I negotiated the purchase of the source code, with the understanding any changes made to it, I would make available back to Tuviah. My partner, Chris Bohnert, an accomplished C programmer himself, would be able to make the *other* changes. I also contacted Kevin at RunRev and asked his interest in RR using the DLL inside their own product. He responded by saying they would consider it IF there was cross-platform support. Well, Chris and I weren't in a position to build a Mac version. Tuviah said he'd consider it. That's were we are now. Tuviah is still interested in building a 'Safari' version, if people are interested. Recently, we chatted and floated the number of $75 for both versions...Mac and PC. Neither of us are planning on this as a significant revenue stream. We would of course like to recover our expenses, and pay for the inevitable support which is needed. So, those of you *seriously* interested in the Mac version, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page. http://www.altuit.com/webs/altuit2/RunRev/altBrowser.htm When I say seriously interested, I mean there's a great chance you'd be willing to pay for this product. The decision on how to prioritize it's development is based upon how many serious responses we get. Edwin, back to your question... Since I didn't write the source code for altBrowser, I asked Chris Bohnert, one of the authors, and he said if it's not in there now, it's easy to implement. Of course, if you need to parse the data, you can always 'get URL' as well. There are a couple of minor fixes we'll need to make in the near future, I'll add this request as well. BTW, currently there is a feature which will allow you to 'get the requested URL' which will allow you to intercept it, process it inside RR, then pass it on to the browser (if you wish). So, if you write your HTML a certain way, you *can* process clicks on a page within RR. This product was written probably about a year ago, but Tuviah had to made some changes to the MC engine for it to work properly -- so we couldn't release until RR2.0. This is why I'm a bit unclear regarding all of it's features. -Chipp -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Edwin Gore Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2003 1:42 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: altBrowser Question Chipp, Figured the answer to this might be valuable to others, so I decded to put it on the list. When using the altBrowser plug-in, is it possible to access the data in the browser? I'm wondering because for something I am woking on it would be really neat to let users browse through a particular website and then, if they see something they like, click a button which would cause my app to grab some data off the site and do stuff with it. altBrowser gets fed the URL to go to by RunRev, is that correct? If so I suppose that even if I can't directly pull the data out of the browser plug-in, I could still grab and parse the url Anyway, look forward to hearing the answers on this. Re: Try, try again
If you don't mind the password being briefly sent in the clear (as part of the name of the process), you can use this: get shell("echo '"&pwd&"' | sudo"&&cmd) Which comes out to something that looks like: echo 'MyPassword' | sudo MyCommand Unfortunately, open process appears to be still broken on OS X. If it wasn't, you could use the "-S" option to sudo to write the password to the process. This is really the way it should be done security-wise. (something like this) put "sudo -S"&&myCmd into theProcess open process theProcess write MyPassword&cr to process theProcess read from process theProcess until eof close process theProcess You can also, of course, execute AppleScript on Mac which should give you the same results as AppleScript Studio can achieve. You could also write the password to a temporary file and pass that to sudo. List, About every 6 months or so, I pose this question in hopes that someone has run across and solved this problem. The previous times I've asked it, no one has responded. I remain ever hopeful... Situation: You want to make a cool GUI for some UNIX commands using MetaCard for OS X. It's easy using the shell command. Example: The tool Carbon Copy Cloner is the perfect example of what I'd like to be able to do. It was made in AppleScript Studio, and it is a GUI interface for some UNIX commands. It asks the user for the root password, and that allows the program to execute commands as root. Problem: No one has been able to tell me how to do this in MetaCard and I can't figure it out. But no one has told me that it's impossible, either. So I remain hopeful. Say a user logs into OS X as a regular user, not root. And I want them to be able to run a series of UNIX commands that will need to be run as root, assuming they know the root password. In the Terminal, there's sudo and su. But neither work using the shell command. Is there a way around this? AppleScript Studio can apparently do it. I'm wondering how it could be accomplished in MetaCard. Any help would, as usual, be extremely appreciated. :) -- :) Richard MacLemale Network Administrator J. W.
