hehe :) I've actually never had OS X hang or spontaneously reset, nor have
I had to re-install it (my current uptime is 49 days), but I've heard there
are some, well, problems. Make sure you guys are all using the latest
firmware for your machine, since I know earlier firmwares caused hell on my
Public Beta machine. That and the segmentation fault error that occured all
the time (apparently due to some faulty memory...). But yeah, Apple made OS
X more mac-like (aka, you have more power over your machine) = more
possibilities for problems.

And as far as performance, OS X is sluggish compared to OS 9. Not compared
to some Sun Machines I've used (unless you stick to vanilla X-Windows), but
definitely not up to par with OS 9. Luckily, it looks like Steve Jobs knows
it since at WWDC he put "Performance" in huge on the top of both consumer
and developers "complaints" lists. Let's hope 10.1 addresses that. For now,
soup up your memory and it'll run much smoother. :)

PS. Did I mention I work for Apple? :-) I don't work on the OS X team
though, so complain away... I too find it disturbing that I need 512Mb of
memory to get good performance on a consumer machine.

Apple decided to hire Hubbard of FreeBSD but I suspect not to replace
Jobs ;-(.
In any case, with all this encouragement I might postpone my good
intentions vis a vis OS X. I went through a bleeding edge phase once,
and it was enough.

We've had to do that twice now too, which is 2 more times than we've
ever had to reinstall any other UNIX OS in the last 10 years, which
included quite a bit of time with Linux 0.99. Throw in a few handfuls

I hear that memory is a big part of OS X speed factors - a G4 will be
faster but friends with G3s with 256M or so tell me performance can be
fine. However, if your Wallstreet has only 96M, you will be in a world of
hurt. ;-)

Anyway, getting more RAM is cheaper than buying a whole new computer (so
the required donations will be smaller)

Unfortunately I don't have OS X yet but you guys "make" me get it
against my will ;-). I have a strong feeling I'll have to ask for
donations for a new computer too; I saw OS X running on a new iBook and
it was painfully slow which makes me think my Wallstreet will most
likely die under stress.
Until then I can't be of any help except to suggest that since libURL is
open source, an incident like this should be a good incentive for users
to learn to use sockets and contribute code and/or debug the library.

My luck was even worst. I have a clean installed OS X, updated to 10.0.4,
running only MetaCardCarbon 2.4b2.
After a few attempts with the socket "accept" command, my TCP/IP settings
corrupted. So I restarted the machine, but TCP/IP can never be able to
configure correctly. I have to recreate a new location profile with new
Ethernet settings, but it'll just dismissed after I closed the TCP/IP
setting.
I ended up reinstall OS X :-(

Re: Mac OS X Internet

2001-06-26 Thread Reed Martin

Hi all,

Thanks for the response, Scott. I could be doing something totally wrong,
but I'm running Mac OS X 10.0.4 and Mail.app, OmniWeb, Terminal telnetting,
etc. all seem to be able to connect just fine. In MetaCard for OS X, I
launched it and, in the message box typed:

answer url "http://www.yahoo.com/";

I waited, grabbed a drink, and 5 minutes later still had nothing. So I
command-.'ed out, and got a blank answer dialog. Not surprising. I then
tried to open a new stack and created a button with the same script as
above. Nothing. I also tried it as:

start using "LibURL"
answer url "http://www.yahoo.com/";

but still no luck. So I tried to use the load command:

on mouseUp
  load url "http://www.yahoo.com/"; with "lDone"
  send "statRep" to me
end mouseUp

on statRep
if urlStatus("http://www.yahoo.com/";) is not "cached" then
put urlStatus("http://www.yahoo.com/";) into fld 1
send "statRep to me in 30 milliseconds
  end if
end statRep

on lDone s
  answer url s
  unload url s
end lDone

And all field 1 ever said was: "requested". I feel like nobody else is
having these problems, and I'm worried I'm missing a crucial step. I tried
all of the above with different URLs, and with and without preceding the
requests with: start using "LibURL" (which should be by default, loaded?)

This is using 2.4B2 for Mac OS X, tried on an iMac 233, a B&W G3/450, and a
PowerBook G3/266. And I tried with 2 different ISPs, and one direct LAN
connection..

Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or if there is a bug in MC2.4b2? I'll
forward some scripts to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well. Are other people on this
list finding success with internet usage using MC under Mac OS X?

Thanks,
Reed

There's a problem with the accept command on that platform, but
everything else should work. We've had a couple of unreproducible
reports of problems with the HTTP library on that platform, though,
and if you've got a reproducible example, by all means send it in to

working properly for other apps: misconfiguration of networking is
very common on OS X because neither UNIX nor MacOS experience is much
