Re: resolution stats
Do any of you have a link to current stats of the marketshare for various default screen resolutions? http://www.servustats.com/screen_resolutionex.php Shows 43.7% at 1024x768, 39.5% at 800x600. My guess? It's not going to change any time soon. I think it's been in that ballpark for several years. My specific question today is: What percentage of computer users are running a resolution of 1024x768 or greater? Extra bonus points if we can turn up something that shows cross-tabs with demographic data. I'm wondering when it will become a good idea to start optimizing screen layouts for larger resolutions, when the majority will move past 800x600. Of course it would still be desirable to suport 800x600 for the next few years, just wondering if designing to optimize for that resolution is a mistake vs. focusing on making things look especially good at 1024x768 -- Richard Gaskin Fourth World Media Corporation Developer of WebMerge 2.2: Publish any database on any site ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.FourthWorld.com Tel: 323-225-3717 AIM: FourthWorldInc ___ metacard mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/metacard ___ metacard mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/metacard

On a related note, I have a client (who is one of the largest suppliers of computer peripherals in the world) that claims the majority of their customers are still running Windows 98. I haven't seen the stats for myself, but I'm inclined to believe their statement given that they continually collect product registrations. But I'm wondering if _optimizing_ for that resolution is the best way to go, if so now then will it still hold up in a year? Looking at the breakdown of resolutions on the survey posted, a strong majority are already at 1024x768 of greater. With all new Macs and most (all?) new PCs shipping with a default higher than 800x600, it seems that some day the smaller resolution will go the way of 640x480. Not today, maybe not next week, but potentially worth planning for as long as 800x600 is still gracefully supported. -- Richard Gaskin Fourth World Media Corporation Developer of WebMerge 2.2: Publish any database on any site ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.FourthWorld.com Tel: 323-225-3717 AIM: FourthWorldInc ___ metacard mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/metacard

Yep, remember those days...640x480 8 bit color.. Funny, the last PC laptop I purchased only goes down to 800x600. It is 1400 x 1050 native -- all in only 14.1 inches. Funny, I design a web page on it and it look HUGE on other systems! Perhaps too large is too bad;-) -Chipp -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Shao Sean Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 9:07 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: resolution stats I'm wondering when it will become a good idea to start optimizing screen layouts for larger resolutions, when the majority will move past 800x600. Yup, I remember having a 128 Mac upgraded to 2 Mb with a mono 19 MegaScreen (1024x768) -- the *second best* computer I ever had!
