Other dealers have more including some that are obviously from the same fall but sold as something different because of a belief that some samples are much better than the L5 classification that will appear in the meteoritical bulletin. [meteorite-list] [OT] Greetings from New York, July 4, 2002
Dear Listees: Hello from the banks of the Hudson River, on July 4, 2002! It is 99 degrees; helicopters are patrolling over New York City; 2,000 National Guard troops are on the streets; the summer flowers are blooming; and flags are flying. A poll says "9 out of 10 Americans have not altered their plans for July 4 celebrations," despite terror warnings from the White House. Sitting here, about 1 1/2 miles due west from the site of the former World Trade Center -- on this our 226 th Independence Day, and the first following the destruction of the Trade Center -- I send greetings to our friends and colleagues around the world who have shown the USA so much support and compassion since September 11. Here's a view from the front of my house, this morning: http://www.notkin.net/temp/july-4.htm Also, a special hello -- and condolences -- to our friends in Colorado and Arizona who have suffered so much loss over the last two weeks. [meteorite-list] Sikhote Newspaper Article
Hello, I have once again found an old meteorite newspaper article...this one on the Sikhote-Alin meteorite. Paper is "The Mainichi" an occupied Japan newspaper in English. Dated Sunday, June 22 1947. (Note: Occupied by American forces). "1,000-Ton Meteorite Drops In Soviet Area" "MOSCOW, June 20 - A huge meteorite weighing 1,000 tons has dropped in the Far Eastern area of the Soviet Union. Soviet Scientist have been dispatched to investgate." Not much of an article. Not sure why either. Russia was not on "good terms" with the Americans after the war but the Berlin Wall was not built untill 1961. So why take 4 months to tell the world in two lines that a meteorite fell? Any thoughts? I looked at that as well. I would more understand if it was for the "conviction" like you usually see rewards that are high (as compared to the item stolen). Re: [meteorite-list] Which meteorite is real - top or bottom?
Tim, I'll guess the bottom one is a real meteorite. Maybe a 1947 SA? The top specimen looks too "roundish". Hematite ore or something like it? Hey...50/50 chance. John Divelbiss IMCA #2006 PS The 102 F (in the shade) we had here in Eastern Pennsylvania yesterday was "not" a dry heat. WOW! At least we finally got a break today...below 90 F.
