[meteorite-list] Re: Question about nickel
Exist any iron meteorite without nickel? none --(so far!)--- and very unlikely. The two elements are so similar; atomic weight, metallic bond, and by physical size of their atoms that there is little way to physically separate them without a heavy planet's gravitational centrifuge. Chemically, here on Earth with free oxygen, iron reacts much more readily than nickel and can precipitated by that means. Re: [meteorite-list] NWA889
Adam, Thanx for response. Now that's two votes for 787, 869 and 900 pairings. As far as 904 goes...it does look similar, and it does have melt inclusions, like others. But the diogenite (which I have not seen or heard of in others, yet) and the crust that you said is just plain ugly, make them different in at least two ways. I know the crust is ugly because I have a nice end piece. With those two items in mind I'll agree that 904 is not paired with the others. But again it is only my opinion here agreeing with you. This is what we have observed so far: A.) The black clasts are impact melt areas not carbonaceous. B.) It appears to be a regolith breccia. C.) Although the chondrules vary in crispness from type 3 to 6 most of them are type 5. D.) The crust is totally different than 869 and 900, is not as fresh and has a rather odd warty texture. F.) The green diogenite looking clasts are achondritic. G.) NWA 904 has different zones which show different degrees of weathering and petrologic type. H.) I have a sample of NWA 869 and have seen hundreds of kilos of it at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and it is not paired with NWA 904. I.) NWA 869 looks as if it might be paired to NWA 787, a very nice looking L6. J.) NWA 869 has had three different classifications L4, L5 and L6. I guess it depends on the type samples that were provided to the laboratories. I do not blame the research labs because most dealers only deposit a 20 gram type sample. Sometimes this amount of material is not enough to cross the different petrologic boundaries and thus you can get many classifications for the same meteorite. Some dealers only send in a portion which they think will get the best classification, sharp chondrules, less weathering etc.. K.) Although NWA 900 has black clasts it does not display the zoning of NWA 904, has no green clasts and the weathering is consistent throughout the stone. L.) In my opinion NWA 787, 869 and 900 are paired. I have not seen NWA 995 so I cannot comment on its pairing status. If we had more time we would do a bulk analysis on each of these to once and for all settle the pairing question. Unfortunately the Microprobe we lease is booked until September. We are working on some very exciting material that we are hoping to announce by then. I remember a time when scientist used scramble at the opportunity to study even ordinary chondrites. I read today that the Silkote Alin fall had pieces of what were essentially shrapnel, from the iron that fell. On the weekend I bought a few pieces of Gibeon, from a guy who had been in Namibia (I'm in SA so it's close). These are bits straight out of the ground. One has a sharp blade of metal coming off it, like it has been ripped. Nothing like a nice neat stone. Is the idea of the meteorite exploding into pieces common? And will it react in the same way as a chunk of iron? Re: [meteorite-list] Question about nickel [nickel-poor iron meteorites]
Hello Rodrigo and list, Vagn Buchwald's Handbook of Iron Meteorites (1976) has a rather detailed discussion of nickel content on pages 76-77 with several histograms showing the frequency distribution of percentage nickel content. He states, In iron meteorites, nickel varies from a minimum of 5.1-5.3% (Tombigbee River, Auburn, Holland's Store) to a maximum of 35% (Santa Catharina). If Oktibbeha County, page 947, is confirmed as an independent meteorite, the nickel maximum increases to about 60%. In Buchwald's histograms, the most nickel-poor iron group, the IIA hexahedrites, show a bell-shaped distribution which drops off very sharply below 5.3%. Of course, Buchwald's data set is now 26 years old and meteoritic science has not stood still in the years since his masterpiece was published. Still, the only irons which I am aware of with nickel content below the 5.1% lower bound which Buchwald claims are the so-called Bellsbank trio, which includes Bellsbank, La Primitiva, and Tombigbee River. These are classified as chemically and structurally anomalous (UNGR) but appear to be related to the IIAB irons. A nickel content of 4.3% was determined for Tombigbee River in 1973, a fact which Buchwald was apparently unaware of at the time his Handbook was published. A paper published in 1984 by Malvin, Zong, and Wasson presents a hypothesis for a process which may have allowed the Bellsbank trio to form under very exceptional circumstances in isolated pockets of phosphorus-rich melt in the IIAB core, with their anomalous composition as a result. This paper is available online at http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html (search for Bellsbank). All things considered, it seems much more likely that an iron specimen with nickel content below around 4% is manmade rather than a representative of an as yet undiscovered group of iron meteorites. Buchwald points out that nickel is extremely siderophile (iron loving), even more so than iron itself. Processes of fractionation in the metal phase allow for a rather wide range of iron/nickel ratios, but the laws of physical chemistry seem to draw the line at around 4% as a lower bound. Best wishes to all, Piper Standard disclaimer: I am not now and have never been a professional meteoriticist or geochemist, and any personal opinions not supported by references to authorities more qualified than myself should be taken with the usual grain of salt. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

We have used PayPal for over 2 years and accept over $50k annually. We have disputed charges, had problems with double billing by FedEx on our PayPal debit card and one idiot that tried to charge back on an item that he paid for because he thought he could get away with it. PAYPAL was very responsive to us, never let us feel like we were not being deat with properly and has never frozen any funds. THE KEY to using PayPal is to follow their rules for accepting payments. Require a confirmed address for items over $250.00, send that item by a trackable shipment such as FedEx and require a signature at the time of delivery. If you follow the rules in the seller protection plan you will not have a problem with PayPal. The 2 class action lawsuits are being brought by bidders not sellers to the best of my knowledge. We have tried bidpay and C2It for payments and they have never been any where near as good as PayPal. Ebay can only improve the service in my opinion. Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay to buy Paypal
PayPal does ask for a checking account to VERIFY AND CONFIRM who you are. They make a couple of less than a dollar deposits to your account. Once they appear in your account you login to their verification page and confirm the amounts they deposited. That allows them to confirm you are who you say you are. Once completed you are now covered under their protection programs and it allows sellers additional protection for accepting payments from verified users with confirmed addresses. It also allow users to send e-checks from their checking accounts, for those that insist on using a check. In our business we do not accept personal or business checks for any reason from bidders. The bank we have our business account with charges us for making more than 7 deposits a month. Having to deposit personal checks in a separate deposit to watch them clear got to be expensive, with an Echeck via PayPal it shows up in our account and then sits until it clears. If it does not clear, we are not charged, I do not have to deposit it and watch it, as with a normal bank and paypal notifies us by email when it clears. People are so paranoid about giving out a checking account but think nothing of using a debit card and punching in their PIN # on a pad at Walmart. Well take it from someone that used to install and service those card readers...they go out to the bank on an UNSECURE Phoneline and the data sent is NOT ENCRYPTED. Anyone with the proper modem and access to that phone line can capture that data streaming to the bank without interupting the transmission. Everything seems normal. With equipment you can buy just about anywhere they can use expired credit cards, and with one pass re-write the mag strip on the old card with your bank info. We recently had a deposit stolen from our banks ATM. It was the ATM on the outside of the bank. Think for a moment that a bank employee comes out nightly before they close to service the ATM and you are woefully wrong. Most ATMs even the ones attached to the banks are LEASED. Another company services the ATM, adds cash and removes the deposits. Just because you have a receipt from the ATM means squat. Luckily they stole a bunch of deposit envelopes and were actually caught by the police. 35 people had their money stolen, ours was returned luckily. We have not had a single incident with money being stolen from PayPal or by PayPal. Follow their rules and they will not have a reason to freeze your PayPal account. They can not access your checking account anymore than I can, they simply use it to verify you are who you say you are.
