Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites, Minor Planets and Meteors CD

2002-07-14 Thread Phil Bagnall

Hi Johnnie and List Members,

Anyone know where I can get a copy of Meteorites, Minor Planets and
Meteors by Philip Bagnall? I understand it's pretty good but I can't find
 it on Amazon.

You could go to www.positron-press.co.uk and look under New Titles, or...

Go to www.minresco.com or, failing that, ...

Drop me a line.

Regards,

Phil Bagnall

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Question

2002-07-14 Thread Bernd Pauli HD

Rhett wrote:

I'm wondering if you have any other information on
the pyroxene and metal values of some of these.

Hello Rhett and List,

Clipperton may be one of those meteorites about which Pierre
cautioned: is there systematic bias? (possible for weathered
finds, oxidation of olivine starts by turning Fe to rust there-
fore decreasing Fa% because it was collected from the ocean
floor and is highly weathered.

Grady (1937), H3.6 has 26.23 % total iron

Moorabie, L3.8:

22.34 % - 22.68 % total iron,
olivine Fa14 (5-20); pyroxene Fs3-29;

Quinyambie, LL3.4:

19.0 % - 19.48 % total iron;
olivine Fa22 (5-35); pyroxene Fs15-30;

Willaroy, H3.5:

25.3 % total iron, olivine Fa15 (10-19);

Xinyi, H5:

26.9 % total iron, olivine Fa15;

QUE 94570: Fa10-13, Fs9-12 but caution (!) - it, too,
was extremely weathered, when it was found.

QUE 94570 was originally classified as a C4 chondrite,
but see:

KALLEMEYN G.W. et al. (1998) Prompt-Gamma Analysis (PGA)
and Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) studies of a
new reduced L chondrite (Meteoritics 33-4, 1998, A081):

Our analyses show that QUE 94570 is not, in fact, a new member
of the Coolidge-Loongana 001 grouplet, but is rather a new L
chondrite similar to Moorabie and Suwahib Buwah.

Best wishes,

Bernd

Re: [meteorite-list] HELP PLEASE

2002-07-14 Thread Nick Gessler

Hi Steve,

I've had some dealings with Duane Penshorn. In those, he has been more
than helpful and generous. I have helped him submit a number of specimens
for analysis at UCLA and he has been quick to provide large samples to the
lab, gratis. His newly recognized old find from California was published
in the last Meteorite Bulletin - this is one of the several he
submitted. I have been trying to get ahold of him for months too, but in
my case I have been trying to give him the results of the analysis of his
specimens and talk with him about the NomCom. When we did talk on the
phone I learned that he was a medical student - so perhaps he is inundated
with work?

Let me know what you hear...

Nick

Hello Jim and List,

According to Buchwald the largest individual
fragment weighs 198 kg and is now in London.

No, not all have been classified and may never be classified. I have a few
complete masses myself that have numbers assigned but I did not bother to
classify because they are obviously common types.

[meteorite-list] Asteroids Could Trigger Nuclear War

2002-07-14 Thread Ron Baalke

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_2128000/2128488.stm

Asteroids 'could trigger nuclear war'
BBC News
July 14, 2002

A small asteroid could accidentally trigger a nuclear war if mistaken for a
missile strike, experts have warned.

Scientists and military chiefs studying the threat are calling for a global
warning centre to be set up to inform governments immediately of asteroid
impacts.

The risk is seen as particularly grave if an asteroid blast were to happen
in areas of military tension, such as over nuclear-armed neighbours India
and Pakistan

Each year about 30 asteroids several metres in length pierce the atmosphere
and explode, with even the smaller sized ones unleashing as much energy as
the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in Japan.

'Panic' reaction

Earlier this month, an Israeli pilot flying an airliner over the Ukraine
reported seeing a blue flash in the sky similar to the type of blast caused
by a surface-to-air missile, despite Ukrainian authorities saying no such
missile had been fired.

Experts now believe the pilot saw an explosion caused by an asteroid
entering the Earth's atmosphere at high speed.

Experts met last week in the US capital Washington DC to discuss what might
have happened had such an explosion occurred over a volatile area such as
the India-Pakistan region.

Neither of those nations has the sophisticated sensors we do that can
determine the difference between a natural Neo (near-Earth object) impact
and a nuclear detonation, Air Force Brigadier General Simon Worden from the
US Space Command told the Aerospace Daily newspaper.

The resulting panic in the nuclear-armed and hair-trigger militaries there
could have been the spark for a nuclear war.

Warning centre call

The incident over Ukraine was also extremely politically sensitive.

Last year, 78 people died when a Russian airliner flying from Israel was hit
over Ukraine by what was believed to have been a stray missile fired during
a military exercise.

Although the US has its own sophisticated military satellites which can
detect launches and detonations of weapons and asteroid explosions, General
Worden said that he and other experts would like to see a new warning centre
established which would gather information on asteroid explosions and make
it available to all governments.

It is hoped that the shared information would prevent a disaster occurring,
and a study looking at the possibility of such a centre is now reportedly
being developed in the US Defense Department.

[meteorite-list] Thin Sections For Sale (AD)

2002-07-14 Thread almitt

Al Mitterling from Warsaw, Indiana ;-)

To those who might be interested,

I have the following thin sections for sale:

Tuxtuac, Mexico (LL5) $40.00
Portales Valley, NM (H6) $50.00
Happy Canyon, Texas (enstatite E6) $75.00 (this is a shock melt)

Buy all three (there are only three sections) and I'll sell the lot for $150.00 post
paid USA or $3.00 extra foreign.

Though there are other thin sections available, these are really premium quality thin
sections that have been absolutely professionally prepared with state of the art
equipment and are of the highest standard. These are sealed to guarantee and preserve
the specimen and are for study/viewing.. These usually have excellent surface area
making them a great value.

I also have listed on ebay other thin sections, some of which are ultra rare and very
hard to get.
