[meteorite-list] Warning Virus

2002-10-05 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi List , I just received an email
supposedlyfrom the meteorite-list , It was infected with a virus, Norton
saw this coming in so it was no problem for me , I have checked and
it is not in the meteorite-list archive as being sent tonight , So I do not
think it was funneled through the list .
 Best Regards to all, And
it's nice to be back on the list again.

[meteorite-list] Virus Alert... DO NOT OPEN Mull Collection !!!

2002-10-05 Thread Jerry A. Wallace

Folks,

Last night an email timed at 2:31 CST was sent to the Meteorite Central
List.
The sender's email address was [EMAIL PROTECTED] . The name of
the sender listed in the header
is Dieter. The body of the email is actually a 'forward' of an old Rob
Wesel email titled Mull Collection
which he sent to the list on Wed, 10 July 2002.

The email contained the new 'worm' known as W32.BugBear@mm. Neither of
the above named
individuals are responsible (directly) for this email (especially Rob)
in that Dieter's computer evidently
contracted the virus due to a lack of current anti-virus protection.

The virus (worm) has the ability to replicate itself and send out emails
to anyone listed in the address book
on that individual's computer.

I sincerely hope that everyone on the list had currently updated
anti-virus software installed on their computers.
It's obvious, of course the Dieter didn't.

I highly recommend the use of Symantec Norton Anti-Virus software. It
has saved me numerous episodes
of having to manually remove viruses, worms, trojan horses, meteorongs,
etc., from my computer system.

For those who need more information concerning this particular virus
(worm), please go to the following
site.

http:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Keep your virus protection updated; it sure is cheaper and faster than
repairs.

Best of luck to all of you,

Jerry Wallace

[meteorite-list] From the Admin - Quick Reminder about virus posts

2002-10-05 Thread ajones

Hello All;

Just a quick reminder to not post multiple emails to the List regarding the
recent virus outbreak. By posting a single message as I did a few nights
ago, I try to alert everyone to take precautions and also alert everyone
that, chances are, you'll probably be exposed (so remember, watch out!).

When many members start posting 'virus' posts (believe me, I know that
there are only good intentions involved), the virus starts becoming a new
menace by sucking up the List server's bandwidth.

If someone gets some really good valuable virus-related information, please
send me the email first and I'll post it to the List if I feel it is in
fact beneficial. And on that note, Jerry Matteo had great links in their
posts pointing to Symantec pages that contain a bunch of information on the
new virus as well as a tool and instructions for making sure your system is
not infected, and fixing it if it is (and all for FREE).

[meteorite-list] VIRUS, PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK!

2002-10-05 Thread azaware

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK! Try this. It came from one of our computer
guys. Found this handy tip about keeping your e-mail virus free. Thought
everyone would like to know about this. A friend passed along this computer
trick today ... As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your
computer it heads straight for your email address book, and sends itself to
everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates. This
trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop
it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to
the fact that the worm has gotten into your system. Here's what you do:
first, open your address book and click on new contact, just as you would
do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the
window where you would type your friend's first name, type in AAA. last
Name type in AAA, email address type [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now, here's what
you've done and why it works: The name AAA will be placed at the top
of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in
an effort to send itself to all your friends. But, when it tries to send
itself to AAA, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email
address you entered. If the first attempt fails (which it will because of
the phony address), the
worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

Hi Piper and list,

I looked at the plans for the Meteor Crater Resort. Very interesting!! Thanks
for sharing it. My co-worker is a Frank LLoyd Wright buff, and she knows my
love for meteorites. Wait till she sees the jpg!---it will absolutely floor
her! I'll ask her if she has any contacts that know more about these plans,
although they would seem to be pretty obscure. Will let you know.

Again, thanks for sharing that tid-bit!

[meteorite-list] Newspaper article, 1-12-1886, Meteoric Stone Origin

2002-10-05 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Reno Evening Gazette Tuesday, January 12, 1886 Page: Front Meteoric Stones WHERE DO THEY COME FROM TO EARTH? The falling of the huge one in Western Pennsylvanie recently - a stone as large as an average house - seems to have excited some interest on the part of many persons to learn something more about these strange and dangerous visitors. It is rare that we hear of one of such great size as this Pennsylvania meteor; indeed, one may well question the truth of the account. But there have been even larger ones, though not, probably, in modern times. The theory of some persons, that these red-hot stones have been thrown out of some volcano, and then been drawn back to the earth's surface by gravitation, is wholly untenable. These fiery rocks come from "other worlds than ours." It is not probable that they are recent emanations from one of the other planets; they are drawn, in all probability, by the earth's great attraction, out of their place in some of the great meteor streams that revolve, like the earth, around the sun, each in its own orbit. At certain points in the annual journeys of our own world and of these great streams of loosely aggregated rocks of many sizes, the two orbits evidently so nearly touch as to make it possible for the globe on which we live to capture some of the meteoric bodies which constitute the fringe, or skirt, so to speak, of the meteor stream. Once, on the 13th of November, 1833, our globe must have brushed through the thinner outer fringe of the astonishing aggregation which has since come to be known among astromoners as the "November stream," in contradistinction to another whose skirts we almost touch in August, and which is called, therefore, the "August stream." Other streams may exist, in the interplanetary spaces, of which the astromers have no positive knowledge; or, there may be irregular masses, or even endless cases of separate meteoric bodies, all rushing around the sun in different orbits. It is certain that countless millions of these objects, mostly quite small bodies, are actually drawn in upon the earth. Most of them, apparently, are burned up before reaching the earth's surface, and descent in an invisible, impalpable form of exceedingly fine dust. Occasionally this can be plainly seen - as it was once, in the suburbs of this city, some time ago, when it seemed at first, shown against the afternoon sun, like a real shower of rain, only a rain from a clear sky, but which proved to be a shower of dust, so fine, that unless it chanced to be seen against the sun, it as invisible. Mr. Proctor, the astronomer, holds this unseen falling meteoric dust to have been an appreciable, indeed an important, factor involved in the problem of the alleged growth of the bulk of our planet, and has actually tried to compute something of the rate and extent of that supposed increase. However, that may be, our globe certainly does capture an anormous number of little foreign bodies. One or more can be seen silently straming across the sky on almost any clear, calm night; sometimes a number of them - their seeming course across the sky, instead of plunging straight down, being merely an optical effect, due to the angle at which the appearance in seen. These meteors, entering the earth's atmosphere, and plunging with more and more velocity as they get nearer the surface, are heated to a white heat (and thus made luminous and visible) by the increased friction and the increased density of the air. Most of them appear literally "burnt up," but some, usually the larger ones, hold out against their own conflagration till they burst with a great explosion, or plunger intact (but red-hot) into the ground - or the sea. Without giving credence to the Western story, a few years ago, of a man being killed by one of these meteors, there is still some small degree of likelihood that such a thing might happen; a much lesser chance than the danger of being struck by lightning. The August train of meteors in computed to be 90,000,000 miles long - or about as long as the distance from the earth to the sun. Others are of unknown length. Where do they originate? The question is easily asked. The answer, while it is one about which we feel but little doubt, seems to be not susceptible of being sustained by actual proof. These meteoric bodies appear to be not exactly like any of our rocks. Many of them are more like a kind of half-vitreous "iron stone" than anything else; they show the work of heat, and ring, on being struck by a hammer. - (Hartford Times)

[meteorite-list] Newspaper Article: 4-23-1908 Minnesota Fall

2002-10-05 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: Manitoba Morning Free Press City: Winnipeg, MB Date: Thursday, April 23, 1908 Page: 1 METEOR CAUSED SHOCK Contact With the Earth at a Point in Minnesota Created Alarm St. Paul, Minn., April 22. - Prof. J. M. Holzinger, of the Winona normal school faculty, says that the meteor observed on Saturday evening was really a remarkable phenomenon. It was observed not only at Winona, but at Lacrosse, Wis., Rushford, Fountain City, St. Charles and Caledonia, Minn. At both St. Charles and Fountain City it is claimed that following the bursting of the meteor there was a distinct shocl, as if the meteor had struck the earth, and at Fountain City it is claimed this was strong enough to make the dishes rattle, and produced teh effects of an earthquake. A further claim is made that one of the fragments came to the earth near St. Charles. The meteor was first observed near the constellation Leo and moved from there in a southwesterly direction. Prof. Holzinger says it was about as large as a half moon. It is claimed at Caledonia that a portion fell not far from there.

[meteorite-list] Newspaper, 1-24-1880, Sodom and Gomorrah killed by meteorites

2002-10-05 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Denton Journal Denton, MD Saturday, January 24, 1880 Page: Front Sodom and Gomorrah Professor Proctor white from Hion, Ill., inder date of December 26th as follows: "The idea that Sodom and Gomorrah may have been destroyed by meteoric downfall is not altogether a new one. I advanced it, but not very seriously, several years ago in the English Mechanic, and it was taken up quite seriously by an ingenious, though rather fiery correspondent of that journal, Mr. E L. Garbett, the well-known architech. He took up the theory precisely in the form in which I had, half jesting, suggested it, viz.; that the meteor system which produced the destruction of the cities of the Plain, was the so-called November system, which at that remote date would have been a September system. It can be shown that Tempel's comet, in whose track the November meteors travel, must have passed near, and may have passed very near indeed to the earth, at about the time which tradition assigns to the destruction of Sedom and Gomorrah. Moreover there can be little doubt that the comet's meteor train was then far compact than it is at present. Again, it is certain that among the meteors of the November system are many which far exceed in size those seen during the display of November 13th and 14th, 1833, some of the falling stars were bright enough to cause distinct shadows to be thrown. Supposing the meteors forming the comet itself, or very near to the comet, to be larger yet, they would probably be able to break their way through the air as the large meteorites do, and if strewn with proportionate density, so as to fall in the form of a compact stream, they would descent as a very destructive shower upon whatever part of the earth's surface happened to be most fully exposed to them. Now it happens, strangely enough, that at the time mentioned in the verse you quote, "The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar; ther. the Lord rained apon Sodom an Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven' - the destroyed cities lay almost centrally on that disk of earth which was turned toward the "radiant" of the November meteors. If ever a special and not very large district of the earth could be so rained upon by meteors that towns in it could be destroyed the catastrophe would unquestionably be attended by just such circumstances as these - that is, the region would be as fully as possible exposed to the hail of meteors, and this hail would be as heavy as possible, which would require that either teh comet itself or a part of its meteor train very close to the comet should be the source of the meteoric hail, In the case supposed the velocity you have mentioned would be far exceeded; for not only does the earth herself speed along round the sun at the rate of 1,100 miles per minute, or more than 18 miles per second, but the November meteors travel with a great velocity - about 24 miles per second - meteorite her almost tilt, so that we have for the velocity with which the meteors rush through the air, something like 40 miles per second. Add to this list when the meteors of November 13th and 14th, 1866, were examined with the spectroscope, the element which was found to be most largely present was sodium, the chief component of our common salt, whence may be derived a "naturalized" explanation of the fate of Lot's wife. Those who take interest in this theory of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah might possibly manage to find some evidence of heavy meteoric downfall in that part of the earth. The search would be as likely to be rewarded with success as that which my esteemed friend, the Abbe Moigno, has suggested should be made for the chariots, ect., of the destroyed army of Pharaoh.
