CATCHING ANCIENT STARDUST

Scientists have discovered a rich source of interstellar dust that they
can study right here in labs on Earth. Tiny bits from beyond the solar
system, dating from before the solar system was formed, have turned up in
meteoric dust sifting down from space.

The vast majority of meteorites that reach Earth are too small to see.
Microscopic ones settle to the ground all around us as fine dust,
unnoticed by anybody except the scientists who regard them as a bonanza
for studying interplanetary material. The dust bits don't get burned by
the kind of fiery plunge through the atmosphere that larger meteorites
undergo. They are so small that the upper atmosphere stops them in their
tracks before air friction has a chance to heat them up.

For more than two decades, NASA has collected cosmic dust samples on
oil-coated plates flown by a U2 plane at altitudes of some 65,000 feet (20
kilometers). Now, aided by new diagnostic equipment, scientists have found
that some micrometeorites contain another bonanza

Re: [meteorite-list] Tatahouine - Pronounciation & MOH Hardness?

2003-03-02 Thread mafer

Hi Anne, Jeff and list

It is by no accident that Luke Skywalker lives on Tatahouine.
Lucas borrowed the name from that town because they shot the Tatahouine scenes
near there. So, I would suspect that the pronounciation in the movie would be
very close to the actual pronounciation if not exact.

[meteorite-list] Tatahouine - Pronunciation

2003-03-02 Thread Matson, Robert
Hi Jeff,

My "assumption" based on rudimentary francais has been
that it is pronounced something like:

ta'-tuh-ween'

with the main accent on the third syllable, and more
emphasis on the first syllable than the second. The first
"ta" rhymes with the "ca" of cat. Again, this is a guess.
The Labennes (or Anne) could give you a more accurate
pronunciation.

Cheers,
Rob

[meteorite-list] Tatahouine - Pronounciation & MOH Hardness?

2003-03-02 Thread Jeff Kuyken

G'day List,

Hopefully someone may be able to help me out with
this one. Does anyone know where Tatahouine ranks on the MOH Hardness scale? (Or
if it has even been tested this way?)

I was also curious with it's pronounciation. Like
so many meteorite names, you ASSUME, but are you correct? ;-)

I would think:

tatar-who-eye-n

or

tatar-who-ene

Or something to that effect. Like I said;
assumption! ;-) Maybe one of the dealers out there may have been
there?

Thanks in advance,

[meteorite-list] Unfortunately...& Unsubscribe solution

2003-03-02 Thread Space Rocks
Hi Dave,

If you turn off delivery (of the digest mode in your case) you can just check the
archive
and see any message you want without all the others. It is an easy way to effectively
unsubscribe also since it is not immediately obvious the way its set up currently.

I enjoy seeing meteorwrongs for educational purposes. You just need to know who the
source is.

Dear List, Gumby Dave;
Cheer up! Don't let Mo-stick Yo-head own your minds! Call him an
idiot, but do not let him rule your meteoritic emotions.
If we ALL never, I mean NEVER answered a few of his sickly boring
meteorwrongic bafooneries, he would probably become bored and depart
from a list that does not respond to him.
Either that, or bombard him with thousands of pictures of your

Date:
March 02, 2003
Classified_Ad
As promised, the Boggy Creek Collection of Meteorwrong
Finds has a very important announcement. For the past
two years we have been in some very delicate
negotiations. We are please to announce that we have
obtained the main mass of a Martian Meteorite (from
the Planet Mars). On April 1, 2003 we will offically
offering dust, slices, and jewelry from the famous
Frass Meteorite. (
http://www.marslife.com/marsmeteorite/index.html ) The
Frass Meteorite (like our lunar meteorite) is very
special. Many scientist have also tried and failed to
get theirs hands on it too. So we will also be pricing
it at ten times more than the current rate because of
its' uniqueness. As with all our items, I will
personally print you a certificate of authenticity.
(please see last ad for instructions about testing)
The Systems Director at the Frass Institute has had
some of the same conspiracy blocking recognition
problems as we have had here at Boggy Creek. We know
this announce will will send terror to those trying to
hinder our efforts. Please pay attention to our web
site for these upcoming changes. March SALE - Fruit of
the Loom Lab T-Shirts - all sizes ($90.00) ( We also
have those real long latex gloves for sale - as seen
in the 'Dung Pile Scene' in "Jurrasic Park"- because I
have an arm hair problem) Project Administrator(I love

(whether by your doing or by someone else)
One of our country's leading experts in Lunar Geochemistry (lunar meteorites),
Dr. Randy Korotev has several lunar meteorite web pages such as :
Lunar Meteorites
http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/moon_meteorites.html
How Do We Know That It’s a Rock From the Moon?
http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/moon/howdoweknow.html
and more
Well, Dr. Korotev has taken notice of at least FIVE ( there may be more) of your
specimens (including ones you keep recycling on the LIST such as 'green man
skull') and put them on the Washington University Department of Earth and
Planetary Sciences web page with his personal commentary for each! WOW!!!
I will first list the specimens on your web site:

(1) http://www.alifyaa.com/meteorite/fc/index.html
(2) http://www.alifyaa.com/meteorite/ln/index.html
(3) http://www.alifyaa.com/meteorite/ct/index.html
(4) http://www.alifyaa.com/meteorite/pm/index.html
(5) http://www.alifyaa.com/meteorite/pl4/index.html

In the same order, the specimens are listed below on Dr Korotev's Site:

(1) http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/meteorites/meteorwrongs/m015.htm
(2) http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/meteorites/meteorwrongs/m017.htm
(3) http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/meteorites/meteorwrongs/m028.htm
(4) http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/meteorites/meteorwrongs/m029.htm
(5) http://epsc.wustl.edu/admin/resources/meteorites/meteorwrongs/m030.htm

Congratulations for getting noticed by such a noted lunar meteorite expert!
Sorry that the commentary is not what you expected, but weren't you already
informed these were wrongs by someone?(or some group?)
When you ask questions who tells you the truth? --- We do! (This includes
Matteo.)
Why do you ignore our simple questions to you?

Best,
Ken

[meteorite-list] Chinge/Chinga & TKW

2003-03-02 Thread Bernd Pauli HD
Lars Pedersen inquired:

Hello Lars and List,

According to the British Catalogue of Meteorites, its official
name is Chinga, but there are several synonyms: Chinge, Tannuola,
Tannu-Ola, Tchinge, Tschinga, Tschinge, Tuva, Urgailyk-Chinge.

R.A. Gallant uses the "Chinge" version in his
articles in Joel Schiff's METEORITE magazine:

GALLANT R.A. (1997) Chinge - Murder, Greed, Dumplings,
& Meteorites (M! February 1997, Pallasite Press 1997, Part I).

GALLANT R.A. (1997) Chinge - Murder, Greed, Dumplings,
& Meteorites (M! May 1997, Pallasite Press 1997, Part II).

The 80 kg you mention are from BUCHWALD V.F. (1975) Handbook
of Iron Meteorites, Volume 2, pp.461-464: "About 30 fragments
of individual weights from 85 g to 20.5 kg, and totaling about
80 kg, were found scattered along the Chinge stream in 1912."

But much more has been found meanwhile - especially by Ivan
Koutirev and his associates, and that's why R.A. Gallant says
in one of his articles:

"...there is equal uncertainty about an estimated total mass
of recovered objects, although it must be considerably more
than 350 kilograms ..."

Best Sunday regards,

Bernd

2003-03-02 Thread Lars Pedersen

Hi all

I have in different books and websites read both
the name Chinge and the name Chinga for the Russian meteorite.

What is the official ?

I have also read about TKW of 80 kg and well over
350 kg.

Does anyone have some official numbers
?

Sincerly

Lars Pedersen

Greetings Rand
Yes I can relate to your story. My mother has had the same dreadfull desease
for the past 13 years but she
still does everthing that she still can do to the best of her
abillities and for that I admire her to no end. It breaks my
heart to see her in this condition and I pray every day for a cure.
