[meteorite-list] Park Forest Question

2003-04-05 Thread walter branch
Hello Everyone,

List member Mike Groetz asked a question about Park Forest
earlier this week but I don't remember seeing many, if any, replies.
My apologies if I missed the replies but I think his question is a good
one.

With all the hoopla surrounding Parl Forestr and the many
wonderful specimens being found, I would like to know what
steps are being made to insure that the specimens are being
legally obtained.

Now, I am NOT accusing anyone of any wrongdoing. It's just that
we all know that the owner of a meteorite find is the owner of the
property on which it fell, be it public or private, therefore it seems to
me that permission or some sort of arrangement would have to be
made with the property owners before a meteorite could be recovered.
Obviously, some dealers have paid the orginal finders for there specimens,
so there
would be sales receipts invloved but I am more interested in meteorite
collectors and dealers who happen to have found specimens themselves.

Again, I am not accusing anyone of any wrongdoing, it's just
that I have read of holes being dug, large and small specimens
being found, and pieces are being sold even before the analysis of this
meteorite as been completed. Discoveries are being made seemingly
daily.

Earlier this week, I received an email from an individual who reported that
he found a suspected meteorite and here is an excerpt
of his email to me:

The field is on BLM land in Nevada,
so there shouldn't be a legal problem. I hope.

Of course, I have already emailed him but this is not atypical
of the many weekly emails I receive.

Anyway, I would appreciate any response.

-Walter

Hi Walter and list,
You bring up a good point here. I also had to wonder that with so many pieces
being recovered from different areas, i.e. Park Forest, Olympia Fields, if
someone is mapping out the finds (for example the Meteor / Barringer Crater
distribution map of 1908) and if any GPS coordinates are being being written
down for any specimens.

Best to all,

I have great pieces up there, full Gibeon slices,
Complete Millbillillie individuals, etc etc etc.
ALL for one cent.

Hello, all you good people of the list.
I love this great hobby and all the people that are involved in it, you
are some of the neatest people I have ever met, even if only by emails. : )
But, at least for the time being, I am taking a break. If the economy
ever picks back up, and therefore my line of work, I am sure I will get back
into it. Right now, it is just to depressing to be on the list, seeing all
the recent witnessed falls and great deals that come along, and can't take
advantage of them. I would like to thank all of you for your generosity and

2003-04-05 Thread Mark Miconi
Why $5.00 per gram when Ivan is selling the stuff on ebay for a starting
price of $1.00. Right now 126 grams for $55.55, that is only $0.50 a
gramI have 3 slices of approximately 50 grams each I will part with for
$3.00 a gram.

In fact a 1260 gram corner cut end slice just went for $900.00.

I will sell my slices for $3.00 a gram and pay the shipping to anywhere in
the US.

I would love to see the price of this stuff go above $1.00 a grambut as
long as Ivan(finmet) is selling on Ebay I doubt is will happen.

There once was a Steve in a 'hood,
Who often was misunderstood.
Then came the 'rite,
That flashed in the night,
And he snatched up as much as he could.

The stones had a nice dark black crust,
And sometimes a roof would go bust.
The people all screamed,
'Twas the fall of their dreams!
Of the money they all were in lust.

Astronomers look to the skies,
To see what new things will arise.
If they see a flash
There's a dash for the cash,

I sure wish I could drive down there right now and join in his hunt.

[meteorite-list] NON Park Forest meteorites!

2003-04-05 Thread Sharkkb8

I've spent an amazing day in Park Forest today, and some remarkable (I hope) pictures to follow shortly. In the meantime, there ARE other meteorites than Park Forest, and some of them can be found here:

http://cgi6.aol.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItemsinclude=0userid=sharkkb8

Some nice, unusual pieces ending tomorow. They all start at ONE DOLLAR, no reserve, including Ahumada, Brenham, Ochansk, 40-some grams of Cleo Springs, and a cute little Imilac individual without the minimum $1 bid yet, at this writing!take a look!

Tom and List,

I for one don't want to see you go. I too have been a bit depressed by all
the selling and so forth regarding the Park Forest meteorites and not being
able to get into middle of it. Watching the prices climb out of site was a
downer for me as well.

Believe it or not--not all of us can put together $5,000, $12,000 or for
that matter, $500 to buy a piece of Park Forest. I live pretty much paycheck
to paycheck, and can set aside about $20-$30 per check after paying
multitudes of medical and household bills.. After a year's time, I have
enough for whatever I want to go crazy on. I admire meteorite dealers who can
put together transportation, hotels and fly in to buy. That's their
bread--butter and their pros. I always wished them the best!

But remember Tom, there are probably more of us who have to pinch pennies
(until they scream), than there are the Robert Haags, and Mike Farmer's of
this world. I don't want to take away anything from these persons who have
been here in Illinois to purchase Park Forest, in the last week or so. For it
stands to reason, that sooner or later, good meteorite dealers such as Farmer
will have material for sale. The price will be what the market will
bear. There's plenty it seems to go around. Additionally, with many good
meteorite list people here finding material and making purchases, I'm
confident the material will eventually get to market.

Tom, you and I will just have to patient, save our pennies, and buy Park
Forest at a later time.

I live about 30 miles from the Park Forest, and unfortunately there were so
many unforseen problems which came in at the same time as the fall, I was
unable to free myself up and go. After 48 hours it seemed to be a moot point
what with, the media and whomever, causing the prices to sky rocket. The area
isn't exactly a dry lake bed, so it stands to reason that more material will
eventually surface, (probably in the most unlikely places).

So Tom, please reconsider. I'm privately cheering on the dealers (listed in
all the previous emails) who risked a lot to come here and acquire specimens
not only for the meteorite collector community, but for the scientific
community as well. Just be patient Tom, our turn will come.

Best Wishes,

Tom,
Please stay on the list. You're not alone, I've been reading the posts
the past week and basically have been laughing at all the hub bub about
this new space rock. Not all of us can buy everything that comes along
and that's fine with me. I'll never have every space rock there is and
I'm fine with that. Just buy what you can (comfortably) from time to
time. I haven't bought a meteorite in quite a while now, the last was
April of last year, Bensour. Stick around, at least we learn stuff in
between the falls, deals, buys, etc., don't worry about buying...there will
ALWAYS be pleny of material to buy in the future.

Do not leave the list , I know it is hard to resist buying sometimes

Tom,
Sorry to see you go.
Many of the now successful meteorite dealers once worked for other dealers to
learn the business.
(they had a dream and persued it)
I look at the LIST as an ongoing education you can't get at any university.
It only cost the time to study and enough interest to question.
Everyone needs a dream even an impossible one.
However, if seeing 'out of reach deals come and go' depresses you,
perhaps you need to rethink what makes you happy and why.
There will ALWAYS be many fantastic deals for LIST members simply by Nature
and the nature of its members.
You have discovered a precious gem, don't discard it as a wrong unless you have
found something of greater value.

Re: [meteorite-list] Good bye List

2003-04-05 Thread Mike Groetz
Hi Tom-
In no way should you leave the list!!! There are
many reasons we should all stay together in this hobby
and money sure isn't one of them. I honestly do not
feel that one's ability to purchase meteorites has
anything to do with the fun we have of learning (and
wondering!)
My position with the company I've worked for just a
few months shy of 30 years now is very questionable
right now with the economy and my age (I just turned
50). I am salaried and seriously sweat a little with
every pay check. Both of our kids are full time
students in college and believe me- college costs and
meteorites do not mix. And we are trying very hard to
get them through without major loans hanging on them
when they get out- yet they are not getting a free
ride either.
Enough of that. This is how I am doing it.
99% of my collection is micros from very good
people. They are highly diversified from many
locations around the world. Not the top specimens
(including Forest Park!!) and rarely do I spend much
over $10 (if that)for each.
But it is like I tell my son at school with his
baseball cards- you may not have the best or the most
expensive- but what you do have are yours and you need
to be proud of them. And he is proud of them as I am
proud of the meteorite collection I do have.
With a purchase here or there of a small micro when
I feel like splurging (I have my share of attractive
NWA's- believe me!)- it keeps my excitement going. I
wondered if I would be a pain in the dealer's sides-
but I have not felt that from them. Believe me- I am
not one of their big spenders although I have wished
many times I could afford nicer or larger as you have.

[meteorite-list] no luck today, but had fun

2003-04-05 Thread Steve Arnold, Chicago!!!
Good evening list.I am back home now with nothing new to report.I searched
high and low, but there was nothing to find.I had a great morning hunting
with mark fazini from homewood. He might have come up with a 1/2 gram
piece of non-crusted material. He bought lunch, then we did a little more
hunting. Then at noon he had to leave, so a I went it alone for a
while.About 1:15 I got a call from jason phillips to let me know where
they are.So I went over and found, marvin kilgore, roman jirasik, rob wesel,
and as I am walking up the street along comes the king himself,BOB
HAAG.Wow talk about some great people in the meteorite realm.I also picked
up in a trade I made, I got a real nice fully crusted 2 gram piece of the
new PK meteorite.Well after all that I went out into some away from it all
and went hunting for a couple more hours , but alas, nothing was to be
found on this day. These last two saturdays have been great.I only wish the
next meteorite fall is right in my back yard.Or at least close by.Well
untill the fall, or tucson, it was great to see alot of the gang
again. This has been a great experience. To have found a meteorite in your
own town is an experience I will never forget. And now it is time to get
back on my life.My next stop, vacation,in CANCUN!

Hi Tom, Steven, Ken, Mike, et al.,

On second thought...

Exactly. Knowledge and enjoyment (fun)
are what's important. Not what is sitting on
your shelf or display case.

At any given time my collection consists of maybe
a dozen specimens (not including micromounts.
I have numerous micros, most of which are ordinary
chondrites. I love ordinary chondrites).

I get a new specimen, study it like crazy, then
pass it on to someone else. Got a bunch
of them on ebay right now at cost or slighly higher
(no, not meant to be a plug). I also enjoy cutting
some into micromounts

Most people would be surprised to learn that my
permanent non-micromount collection at this time
consists of exactly six specimens, four of which
cost me less than .50/gram.

The other two, NWA 482 and Zagami, cost me slighly more
per gram..

...okay, a lot more :-)

I am very proud of my collection.
One of my favorites in my collection is a 15 gram piece of
Sikhote-Alin shrapnel, a picture of which is on my site.
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/gallerysikhote-alin15.96.html

I paid $6.00 to Jim Strope March of last year for it. I am being
honest when I tell you that, if I had to chose between
that 15 gram shrapnel and 15 grams of Park Forest, I would chose
the shrapnel.

Tom, like you have a laughed over the things I have read over
the past week or so, particularly the maneuverings among dealers.
I got a small piece of Park Forest today in partial trade for some
other stuff (like money, :-) but I am not sure
if I will keep it. There is so much other, less expensive
material that interest me. Maybe I will study it for a while then pass it
on.

Just collect what interests you and what you can afford. Everyone's
different. Everyone has different wants, needs, resources, and
capabilities.

After all, it's just a hobby. We had my daughter's 4th birthday party today
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/temp/bday.jpg

There are obviously much more important things in life than meteorites.

-Walter

PS: We had my daughter's party at a playground type
place at the Savannah Mall, and in the back was a Children's
Museum which consisted of a row of display cases containing
fossils. I correctly identifed what appeared to be a 7kg
rusting Nantan in one of the cases. I turned to my wife and
said, 7 kg today...6.5 kg tomorrow.

I could not agree with that thought more then I do.

I would also like to encourage you Tom, not to leave the list or the hobby.
I fact I would hate to see the day when the list was only composed of those
that spend large amounts of money on meteorites. The power of this list has
always been its diversity.

While the price of Park Forest can be somewhat saddening, one does not have
to worry about meteorites running dry anytime soon or that meteorite bargins
will not be present in the future. Personally, I would rather have a 2 kilo
NWA then a 10g slice of Part Forest. I often find purchasing an old
meteorite book to be a better bargin then a meteorite itself.

Hello All,

I would consider trading some of my Park Forest
slices for something that catches my interest...run it by me.

While the Park Forest prices seem high...you have
to keep some things in mind. This meteorite is the 1st to hit a
major
populated area with at least 4 house impacts, 2 car
impacts,
fire hydrant, post, curb, side of house, fire
station, etc...

It is not going to be cheap. Peekskill is still
about ~$40.00 +
per gram.

In anycase if some of you do not have the $$$ but
have something to trade run it by me

Most of you should already have a copy of my list
that I posted earlier.

[meteorite-list] A Few Musings

2003-04-05 Thread Greg Redfern
Good Evening Everyone,

Just a few thoughts to share this evening if you don't mind.

The true power of this List has been shown over the past two weeks or so
and I would like to share what it means to me (and hopefully all of us).

Steve Arnold (of Chicago, not IMB) brought the PF fall to the attention of
most of us. Then the intrepid hunts of many of our colleagues brought us on
site information and ultimately, specimens to admire and/or buy. Then we
learned first hand the total aftermath of a significant fall on a major
urban area - all of the good, the bad and the downright ugly.

But it was the LIST that gave us all of these experiences!

For Tom (please do not quit the list because of meteorite envy...we ALL
suffer from it Tom, believe me) it was hard to bear reading about all of
the meteorite trading going on as it was for most of us. But there are
pieces of PF to be had at reasonable cost, if not size. Just to have a
fragment of this is beyond comprehension!

All of us, when you get right down to it, LOVE meteorites. Each that I
own is part of meI do not think I could bear to part with them which is
why I decided I could not ever sell any I acquired. Meteorites are the
closest to space any of us will ever get. My God, we can go to our
collections and based on what we have collected touch a comet, the asteroid
Vesta, THE MOON AND MARS (!!!), PRE-SOLAR GRAINS4.5+ billion years of
history concerning the Universe.

That is what the List is all about dear colleagues...the rush we get when
we are on the hunt and/or the quest for up close and personal knowledge of
our place in the Universe. NONE of us will ever own all the meteorites in
the world which means there is plenty of room for all of us.

And you know what the neatest thing is in this passion of ours? We NEVER
know what is going to happen in the next second as our planet sweeps through
space.

Thank you Art, and all of you on this List, for giving ourselves a means
availlable no where else to pursue and pontificate about our passsion.

My best to you all,

Greg

[meteorite-list] Walter's posting about meteorite ownership

2003-04-05 Thread William Steele
Hello Walter and List,

The ownership of meteorites found on federal land is not a simple issue. For
information on this topic, visit the following website...

http://www.bgroveswon.com/meteoritelaw/meteorite_law.html

The case of the Old Woman meteorite is particularly interesting. The original finders
could have been owners of their fantastic find but were unable to move it. The
Smithsonian recovered the mass using military support.

Rob

Earlier this week, I received an email from an individual who reported that
he found a suspected meteorite and here is an excerpt
 of his email to me:

The field is on BLM land in Nevada,
so there shouldn't be a legal problem. I hope.

Of course, I have already emailed him but this is not atypical
of the many weekly emails I receive.

Re: [meteorite-list] Good bye List

2003-04-05 Thread Thetoprok
 Tom,
I'm gonna leave all the eloquent, poetic words of wisdom to the better educated names that grace this list, and say "MAN, COME TO YOUR SENSES"! Up until this fall, I probably had the most meager collection of anyone on this list. I'm not affraid to tell you or anyone here that I am a regular 'Joe', and have had my share of tough times, and sometimes I look at the meteorites on the dealer sites and it almost KILLS me to know that I can't buy this stuff! The most I ever spent on a meteorite is $86.00 for an ugly old Gao, whoppee #%@!
I hunt for mine when I get the chance, and as you well know, if you expect to procure a respectable collection, hunting is not the way to go! So I continue to fight the good fight, stay optimistic, buy when I can, and keep lurking!
I joined this list a very short time ago. It turns out that it was right on time for me. If I hadn't joined this list when I did I may not have heard about PF until the next edition of "Meteorite" magazine! Then where would I be? Not sittin' on 638 grams! (thanks Steve!)
Come on Tom, no matter how depressing it can be to look in on the action that seems to be passing you by, you shouldn't deny yourself what is obviously important to you, and you shouldn't deny us your company and valuable input.
Reconsider,
Larry Atkins

 Hi,
It is nice for me to see that I am not the only one
 who cannot afford to
fork out huge sums of dosh to buy this new fall!
It is frustrating for us poorer collectors to see
 all this wonderful stuff
coming along, and knowing that the chances of us
 acquiring a tangible slice
 cheaply is small!
Thank heavens for Bensour, Kilabo and Thuathe! At
least I get a chance of
acquiring a fresh fall at an affordable price.
But some of this new fall, especially the 'hammers'
 is really really cool!

 Ho hum

Anyone want to buy a kidney?

 very best!
