[meteorite-list] Oragnism at 121 degrees celsius

2003-08-18 Thread mark ford

An organism has been discovered that can thrive at a record-breaking
121 Celsius.

‘Strain 121’ gains energy by reducing oxidised
iron compounds

The single-celled microbe grows at higher temperatures than any other
known lifeform, according to scientists in the United
  States.

[meteorite-list] identification if poss!

2003-08-18 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,
I have been sent some material which was in an old box marked 'meteorites'.
It was sent to me as a gift and also to attempt some sort of visual id as to
see if this is meteoritic in origin.
I have taken some pics.
Notice that one of the pieces seems to have both caliche and also what looks
to me like morenosite and is quite shale-like (ie very weathered) but
slightly magnetic -the other kinda looks familiar, is more strongly magnetic
and seems to remind me of some irons I have seen but cannot recall!

Please peruse and reply (offlist is fine, of course!)

I have heard the best method is to bury it in diatomaceous
earth or kitty litter WITH NO CHEMICALS for several months.
When the material no longer sticks to it, it will have had all
the oil sucked out of it.
Good luck, Michael

[meteorite-list] Meteorites and fish tanks Off Topic delete if not interested

2003-08-18 Thread David Freeman
Dear List;
Pardon my off topic, well, sort of off topic question.
I had a person come to me and ask about putting a common no-name NWA
orphan step child meteoritein their fish bowl with a gold fish. I
know that gold fish are pretty hardy sort of miniature scavengers... Any
chromosome morphology to be expectedis not my question.

But to go further, the sensitivity of swimming scaly things to mineral,
and other stuff. Do we have any expert fish tankers out there in the
meteorite world that could offer an opinion? Please email me off list.

Thank you in advance,
Dave Freeman
